Officials Later Backtrack; Allow Boy to Fly Flag on Bike

DENAIR -
13-year-old Cody Alicea rides with an American flag on the back of his bike. He says he does this to be patriotic and to honor veterans, like his own grandfather, Robert. He's had the flag on his bike for two months but Monday, was told to take it down.

A school official at Denair Middle School told Cody some students had been complaining about the flag and it was no longer allowed on school property.

"In this country we're supposed to be free," said Cody. "And I should be able to wave my flag wherever I want to. And they're telling me I can't." Cody had to take the flag off his bike and put it in his backpack, where he kept it all week.

Cody's grandfather says the school was concerned about racial tensions or uprisings because of the flag. He feels if there was really a problem it should have been brought up two months ago, not during Veterans week. And if it was an issue of safety, parents should have been contacted.

"No action should be taken. We don't want any repercussion," said Roger Alicea. "We just want Cody to be proud of what he's doing." Roger says the family is not planning to take any legal action, but they do want to meet with school staff.

Cody says he wants to serve in the military some day, and is raising money for a trip to Washington, D.C. in the Spring.

After being contacted by FOX40 Friday morning, Denair's Superintendent says Cody will be allowed to keep the flag on his bike. He told FOX40 he and the school are patriotic, but their main priority is keeping students safe; the school will focus on the students who are causing uprisings. Riding a bike is still not allowed on school campus, but when Cody rides his bike to school he can now fly the flag.

I like that comment in the last paragraph: "The school will focus on the students who are causing uprisings." Good idea. Maybe you could have thought of that before FOXNews called to ask why you were allowing racial arsonists to dictate whether the American flag can be displayed by a kid in his own country?

The price of liberty is eternal vigilance.

Amazing. And yes, focusing on the students who are racists and troublemakers is what the school should be doing.

The location showed Denair. Is that in Texas?

At least we can be vigilant now. Ten years ago nobody would have heard about this.

Where's Queen Nancy? Shouldn't she be there as the 2nd in line of succession to defend this very flag? Where are all those Manfranciscan patriots? Where are those staunch defenders of liberty that Manfran is so well known for? Just completely baffles me.;)

She'd be the first to defend this kid if he wanted to burn the flag. Display it without any reservation or irony, out of patriotic sentiment? Not so much.

It is a crying damn shame when officials make Patriotism an issue to be against. That school official should be taken out back by some pissed off parents. Maybe get a visit from some Marines. This crap disgusts the hell out of me.

And Wilbur or Wei will be here any minute to tell us how dangerous it is that we feel that way.

Let me get this straight. Flying the American flag on the back of a bicycle is somehow racist? Holy frigging shit.

Haha are you going to argue for the murder of school officials because they aren't patriotic? Because that tends to be what "taken out back" means.

I'm looking forward to you defending violent hyper-nationalism.

Ummm... no. Taken out back and shot would mean to kill them. Taken out back is akin to being taken to the woodshed.

Which is exactly whats needed. A good ass whuppin to help put his dumbass straight. There are days I think you could use one as well.

Yes, that's what was implied, an Ass Whoppin'. Apparently one of our resident morons isn't capable of understanding that simply based on the phraseology. Of course you go over to DU, and all they talk about is
executing Conservatives, but that's OK, because their Liberals, and so much smarter than us knuckle dragging Conservatives.

psssssttttt - you forgot the link - http://www.fox40.com/news/headlines/ktxl-americanflagbike11122010,0,3045879.htmlstory

According to wikipedia - the demographics of Denair are:

The racial makeup of the CDP is 78.61% White, 0.26% African American, 1.45% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 15.35% from other races, and 4.06% from two or more races. 26.55% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

So it would seem to me that the fear is offending the hispanics who are most likely Mexicans.

So, wanting to display a flag makes a child a Nazi?
And you wonder why we think that you are less than patriotic...

Haha are you going to argue for the murder of school officials because they aren't patriotic? Because that tends to be what "taken out back" means.

As it has already been pointed out, taken out back is shorthand for being taken to the woodshed, and is a metaphor for a spanking, which is, itself a metaphor for being chastised. No one here is arguing for, or would support, physical violence, much less murder, in the case of someone who has demonstrated a willingness to protect bullies and punish a kid for flying a flag, although we do question their competence as school administrators and their values as citizens of a free nation.

The murderous punishment of those who stray from the approved line is something that your idols do, not ours. Your namesake, Krushchev would have happily had them sent to the Gulags for not being sufficiently patriotic, something that you may want to keep in mind when you accuse us of harboring totalitarian inclinations.

A very foolish reply, in my view, even without the picture, which I shall not include. I think three outings for this image are probably enough for one thread.

You have to have known that no-one here was seriously suggesting that the official be executed, anymore than anyone here would like to see the reality of your image re-enacted in the United States.

Buck up, buddy.

To Arms! My Brothers! My Sisters! Please tell me you understand the difference between the OP and the reply you posted and how they are contradictory in nature and not conciliatory.

Please come back and revise your post to state that you reread the OP and that your reply was possibly the dumbest thing ever posted on CU. If so, maybe you'll regain some semblance of credibilty.

Here's a start to help you understand the difference...In the OP, no one (especially the State) was telling the boy to put anything on. OK? Try and take it from there.
