The ghosts of Amsterdam: Pictures merge modern day and yesteryear to show city in two lights

They are scenes of Amsterdam that merge modern day with yesteryear.

A busy street has Dutchmen celebrating the liberation of the city, while tourists mingle outside a Nazi recruitment office. And while the pictures owe much to modern technology, they also show a historical side to the Dutch capital.

They are the work of historical consultant Jo Teeuwisse, who created the scenes after discovering some negatives at a flea market and scanning them onto her computer.

After that she found the places illustrated in the old photos and took her own pictures at the modern day locations. Then she merged the two together using computer software to create the pictures illustrated.

Work and the Second World War form a large part of her portfolio, with the photos usually showing either factory workers or events which took place during, or after, the War.

The undated first picture illustrates a group of workers at ease, possibly outside their factory, although by her own admission Jo said she cheated on this one as she altered the modern day location.

The second shows the Liberation Parade in the Vijzelstraat on Friday 29th June 1945, where thousands marched to celebrate the end of the War.

As Jo is from Amsterdam, the city is the main location of her work, but the French city of Cherbourg has also been a source of some of her wizardry.

Here evidence of war is particularly obvious as troops march prisoners through the city's modern day streets.

More pic coolness at the link.

I have always been fascinated by old photos from the WWII era and similar photos from the present time.

Amazing. It's like there are ghosts.

The guy in the bottom left of the photo is wearing pedal pushers like Ginger wears. :D
