McCain's campaign has finally started some heavy hitting:
Texas billionaire Harold Simmons, a major backer of John McCain’s presidential campaign and Swift Boat Veterans for Truth four years ago, is the sole donor to an ad attacking Barack Obama over his relationship with William Ayers, founder of a militant group.
A campaign finance filing with the Federal Election Commission shows Simmons donated the entire $2.87 million being used by a newly formed group, American Issues Project, to air the commercials in Ohio and Michigan during the next week....

And the predictable Obama response:
Bud White’s excellent piece on the Republican 527 ad now hitting the airwaves showing only part of Barack Obama’s relationship with unrepentant American terrorist, Bill Ayers, has the Obama campaign worried.....Second, the Obama campaign has sent this letter begging stations not to run this ad. (PDF at site; see excerpt below) Obama’s folks are in a snit that their Golden Child is being associated with terrorism. Well, too damn bad. It is true. Barack was in bed with Bill Ayers for at least 13 years.
See ad at:

The letter itself is a PDF file of an image and text can't be cut and pasted. But the letter begins:
"A group called the American Issues Project has approached your station to buy time for an advertisement entitled "Know Enough?" The ad attempts to associate Barack Obama, a United States Senator and the presumptive Democratic nominee for President of the United States, with terrorism and acts of terror.
This is, of course an appalling lie, a disgraceful smear of the lowest kind on the Senator's patriotism and committment to the rule of law."
The letter actually misrepresents the ad. The ad itself just points to Obama's longstanding friendship with Ayers, his characterization of Ayers as "respectable," and to the fact that Ayers and Obama served on a board together in Chicago. It does not say that Obama had anything to do with acts of terror. It does say that Obama is friends with an American terrorist.
