Leslie Nielsen dies at age 84

LOS ANGELES - Leslie Nielsen, who traded in his dramatic persona for inspired bumbling as a hapless doctor in "Airplane!" and the accident-prone detective Frank Drebin in "The Naked Gun" comedies, died on Sunday in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He was 84.

The Canadian-born actor died from complications from pneumonia at a hospital near his home at 5:34 p.m., surrounded by his wife, Barbaree, and friends, his agent John S. Kelly said in a statement.

"We are saddened by the passing of beloved actor Leslie Nielsen, probably best remembered as Lt. Frank Drebin in 'The Naked Gun' series of pictures, but who enjoyed a more than 60-year career in motion pictures and television," said Kelly.

"It's like having sex. It's a painstaking and arduous task that seems to go on and on forever, and just when you think things are going your way, nothing happens." - Frank Drebin Naked Gun 2 1/2

RIP Leslie. :(

Funny guy but there are 2 movies I bet you all didn't know he was in. One was Forbidden Planet, a movie famous for Robbie the Robot. The other was the original Poseidon Adventure as the ships captain.

I'm not joking. And don't call me "Shirley." :D

It's certainly one of the best, but what makes it work is Nielson's deadpan delivery, which is why he was so perfect for the role. Up until then, he, Robert Stack and Lloyd Bridges had been the kind of actors that you'd get to play those roles in a straight drama, which is what made their performances so hysterically funny. Now, when I go back to some older movie and see Nielson deliver a dramatic piece of dialogue, I keep expecting a punchline. Not too long ago, I saw the original Poseidon Adventure, and there was Leslie Nielson, as the captain. There's one shot of him on the bridge as the tidal wave looms over it, and the camera cuts into a close up for his reaction, and I suddenly expected him to turn around and jump out the other side.

RIP.

How sad - he was okay as a dramatic actor but he really shined in comedy. :(

I find it interesting that the man was deaf . . . .

He was also in Creepshow. He did a good job in that one.

I remember him as the captain in The Poseidon Adventure. He was the first to die.

He was a funny guy. Airplane is one of my all time favorite comedies.
