"Sperm and HIV are remarkably similar in their natural mechanism of genetic transmission," Wickline said in a press release. "Both need to fuse with their target cell in order to deliver their genetic payloads -- DNA in the case of sperm, and RNA in the case of HIV."

We've known for years now that unprotected sex can lead to both pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV. We've also known that condoms do a pretty good, but by no means perfect, job of blocking sperm and the HIV virus. But Dr. Sam Wickline of Washington University Medical School has proposed a radical new way of preventing both pregnancy and disease: not by blocking sperm and viruses, but by killing them.

This month Wickline won a $100,000 Grand Challenges Explorations grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation that will fund the development of a new vaginal antiviral contraceptive gel. Wickline's gel will contain nanoparticles that will target both sperm and HIV and deliver a toxic bee venom that will incapacitate both the cell and the virus.

There is no way to make a contraceptive like this effective at a high enough rate to be a more reliable method than a properly used condom.

Unless the chemical kills the sperm at the source, before it leaves the man's body (and who knows what kind of negative effect on a man's body that could have), there will always be some that are strong swimmers and can avoid the bee venom that has been implanted in the woman's vagina.

It's just more money being wasted on an unnecessary product. The only thing that makes it necessary is that men don't like using condoms.

its a worthwhile goal to get rid of the condom, they suck all the spontaneity out of the moment as well as sensation. As guys we hate condoms and if a suitable replacement can be found so bee(haha) it.

Don't be promiscuous and don't date promiscuous women, and you only have to wear it the first few times with a new partner. Once both of you have been to the doctor and you can assure the other in that way, you can find a more convenient method that is about contraception and not disease prevention.

Your obvious good sense should be a candidate for some sort of a grant. It's priceless and so simple. Folks don't go for simple and reliable. Our world would be better if they did. Kudos to you, noonwitch.

I love all you hens who don't have to struggle with the damn things, telling us whats best for us. Now all men should use them if no viable alternative is available but if they can come up with something as good or better then the condom I'm all for it. Besides men should only worry about STD spread not getting pregnant thats your problem. /DUCKS :D:p

What kind of girls do you date? You need to date public school graduates, they teach the girls how to put condoms on a man in public school health class.
