Is this ballerina really too fat to play the Sugar Plum Fairy?
leading ballet critic Alastair MaCaulay said Ringer 'looked as if she'd eaten one sugarplum too many.'

" She Does Have Rather Massive Powerful Thighs ! "

A leading ballerina who was criticised for being too fat has hit back about her weight.

Jenifer Ringer, cast as the Sugar Plum Fairy for the New York City Ballet production of The Nutcracker, said on NBC's Today show that her body is part of her 'art form' and is there to be criticised.

She refused to ask for an apology about a New York Times review that singled out her size.

She could probably BE the nutcracker with those thighs.
She looks in excellent health and shape to me.

She does have a larger body than most prima ballerinas I've known. But I wouldn't call her "big" or "large". I'm glad the NYC Ballet is hiring a bit more "non-traditional" dancers. She looks like a beautiful dancer to me. And she has an incredibly healthy attitude about her weight/size. Good for her.

A well-formed male midget, not more than three feet tall, is being sought by Mrs. John F. Lyons, local manager for the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, for an appearance in Bacchanale here on the night of Feb. 2

I only talk about it when I feel like it, so put your baby wipes away.

Once a week? I posted pictures maybe about two or three times. And being that I've been here for a while, your math is wrong... also evidenced that you think 110lbs is the proper weight for women under 6'1".

It wasn't qualified with a personal statement. Gotta watch that sort of thing. Plus once you get over 5'7", 5'8", they cross over from thin to skeletal. But if you're into borderline necrophilia... it's cool.

So... you only saw one picture and it blew up to posting pictures every week.

OH-kay.

Wrong. She's 37 years old and she's survived the normal eating disorders that end most ballet careers. That in itself is a major achievement. The food restriction that most female ballet dancers endure to achieve the "correct" body type virtually ensures that most of them will develop osteopenia early on. this leads to stress fractures and spinal compression, nerve damage, and bone deformities in the feet. Not exactly the best outcome for trained athletes.

Ballet dancers have had many body types over time and in various ballet "cultures'. The Balanchine ideal isn't the best visually or athletically, it's just the accepted standard right this minute.

She's nowhere near being overweight.
