The day Niagara Falls ran dry: Newly-discovered photos show the moment the iconic waterfall came to a standstill

It's taken 41 years, but a previously unseen set of photos of the mighty Niagara Falls reduced to nothing more than a barren cliff-top have finally surfaced. The stark images reveal North America's iconic - and most powerful - waterfall to be almost as dry as a desert.

In June 1969, U.S. engineers diverted the flow of the Niagara River away from the American side of the falls for several months.

Pretty cool photos.

I always liked the way the falls look when they are frozen.

great pictures. And it is freaking awesome the power in that water. Especially the lower part of the river after the falls further down from where maid of the mist travels in. That water is unnavigable. Few have managed it and survived. You can't imagine the power till you're standing right next to it.

but i gotta say. Is this all that the daily mail has to offer today to its readership? Not only is this OOOOllllld news, the headline is misleading. Obviously there's not enough islamic and leftist grief that the brits are enduring now to make THAT the topic of daily mail conversation.

They've got to have something to keep them busy until they can get compromising photos of Kate Middleton.

Oh me too. I was there once in January. The power of the water
and the lights at night bouncing off the ice is just so cool-er-est.
Winter is the best time to go. I like to stay on the Canada side.

For sure. It's one of our national treasures I say.
You have to stand next to it to really appreciate the raw power of it.
