Authorities were working to determine Tuesday the cause of death of a 28-year-old woman who was found inside a suitcase on a street in East Harlem, police said.

The discovery was made at about 12:15 a.m. in front of 435 East 114th St. when a passerby rummaging through garbage saw the sealed black suitcase and opened it, a law-enforcement official familiar with the case said. Police then received a 911 call reporting an unconscious person in the luggage.

Responding officers saw the suitcase with a foot hanging out of it and safeguarded the scene until paramedics arrived, who declared the female victim dead at the scene, police said. She appeared to have suffered a wound to her head and blood was pooled inside the suitcase, police said. Her body was clothed, with the upper part of it covered in a black garbage bag, police said.

Police said the medical examiner would determine the cause of death. Video surveillance recovered from a nearby building shows a man walking on East 114th Street while pulling a suitcase that appeared similar to the one that contained the woman's body, the official said. Detectives doing a canvass of the area also found a store on Second Avenue that sells suitcases of the same brand and design of the suitcase the woman was discovered in, the official said. It was said to have the brand name "RWA Bird."

The woman, whose name is being withheld by The Wall Street Journal pending authorities notifying her family, previously lived in the Bronx and has been arrested 14 times since 2006, the official said. Ten of those arrests were for criminal possession of a controlled substance, with the most recent being in January. The dispositions of the cases weren't immediately known.http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704774604576036053490677170.html?m od=googlenews_wsj
