Richard (Dick) Winters, the Army commander whose heroism during World War II was immortalized in the book and television miniseries "Band of Brothers," died last week in central Pennsylvania. He was 92.
An intensely private man, Winters had instructed loved ones not to release news of his death until after his funeral. He died on Jan. 2 from complications of Parkinson’s disease, his family said.

Should have won the CMOH. Too bad back then the stupid regulations had a quota of only one to be given per division ....and he was too late.

Here is a link to the Currahee Military Museum in Toccoa Georgia where Dick Winters and the paratroopers trained. It is a small museum but really nice. Many of the Paratroopers have reunions in Toccoa every year in October.

There was a movement to have his DSC upgraded to the MOH a few years ago, after the show came out, but MAJ Winters asked the people involved to stand down. He was a courageous and gallant officer, a great Soldier, and, as the MOH story shows, a truly honorable and humble man. RIP.

A true hero. The world is a lesser place without him.
R.I.P. soldier.
A life well lived.
Rest in peace Maj. Winters.
