uses a system for BMI that doesnt take into account lean body mass?

My BMI is 35.5 and according to the experts I am "morbidly obese"

Hardly.

Just like the fucking food pyramid that has made this the fatest country in the world....

The BMI is just a quick way to determine relative fatness for people from a wide variety of ethnic types. It was never meant to be a standard.

BMI is useless for certain athletes, older people, and people with with very low body fat but who also have more lean mass.

A better measurement of fatness is waist size (for the non-pregnant).

Right. Typical government. A blanket approach when there are too many variables to really make it accurate for everyone.

I just use a pair of calipres for measuring body fat..but my real test is to keep the waist around 32-34.

Still working on that one.

It's waist size that matters most not weight. If your waist size is above 36 to 38 for males your risks of health problems something like doubles or triples.

hydrostatic is the most accurate.

Yes, it is but it also costs a hundred bucks or more for the test which has to be done in a special facility with the right equipment.

The BMI isn't a good measure of individual fatness but it's an acceptable measure of demographic fatness. The waist/hip ratio by sex is a much indicator of excess fatness. Why doctors don't use it is beyond me. It's a trivial calculation.

Of course, using the BMI and then combining the male and female BMI categories together did allow doctors to instantly diagnosis 30 million Americans as overweight or obese where they were normal or just overweight the day before. Who would benefit from that?

Maybe the diet industry and the agricultural interests who developed the How-To-Get-Fat-Really-Fast Food Pyramid.

I am on a cutting diet right now to lose weight before my wedding in march. I eat ribeye steak, fried burgers with bacon and cheese. 6 eggs every morning with a quarter lb of bacon, basicly meat and cheese and I have dropped 8 lbs in a week. I plan on another 19 in the next month and a half.

Funny thing is when i was 200 in boot I looked skinny as Hell and like shit but according to the health experts at that weight I was overweight. I look my best at 220 to 230 but that's hard to maintain as a power lifter and highland games athlete.
Hell if you weight less than 250 the heavy weight for distance implement is gonna yank you around.

Highland games? Yeah you need to have some serious upper body muscle mass to do those.

Look at some of the guys who compete in the world's strongest man contests. Do those guys look overweight? BMI is crap.

yeah been into highland games for the past year. Lots of olympic form training involved if you can believe it.
The caber toss training involved cleans and high pulls. The weight over bar training involves snatches and hang cleans.

The guys who are little always get their asses handed to them.

BMI doesn't apply to athletes. A person who weighs 220-230 at 6'1" with a bodyfat percentage of 15% is not obese, but a person who weighs 200 lbs at 6'1" with a bodyfat percentage of 30% is. The only accurate measure is bodyfat percentage, which can be determined several ways. The army test involves a height, neck and waist measurement, applied against a table that adjusts for age (for men, that is; they do a different measurement for women). Assuming that your waist isn't huge, your arm measurement probably means that your neck is. You probably have a bodyfat percentage in the low 20% range or upper teens, which means that your lean mass is greater than your BMI weight.

At 5'11", I'm supposed to weigh under 178lbs. But on my last APFT and weigh in, I was at 197 , and had a bodyfat percentage of just over 20%, which means that my lean mass was around 160lbs. If I were to weigh in at what the BMI says that I should weigh, my bodyfat percentage would be about 10%, which would put me at the level of an Olympic athlete. When I graduated from basic training, my bodyfat percentage was 17%, and I was slightly leaner than that when I graduated from OCS.

Zafod
01-13-2011, 05:45 PM
my body fat is 23%

I plan on getting to 250 and staying there and getting as strong as I possibly can while staying at 250. Sounds easy but its not.

when I get done with my training I want nothing more than to clean out my local burger joint.

I dont but damm I am starving. and one doesnt know it but to build strength you need to eat. There is no way to build strength and diet at the same time.

you do one or the other.

Thats what most people fall into. they try to get jacked and slim at the same time and wonder why they dont get results......

when I see the plates grow on the bar I know I am getting results that I want for strength.

right now I am dieting to slim out for my wedding in march.

after the wedding I will be bulking again.

and to think what I use to bulk is what the food pyramid tells me is a healthy.....

Generally, anything below 20% body fat takes effort, and anything below 15% takes serious cardio, which would undermine your goals. You also need a certain amount of bulk in order to perform the kinds of events that you are doing, so being cut up won't do you any good, and would, in fact, be counterproductive. From your pics, you look like you're in good shape, and from what I've read here, I'm glad that I've never pissed you off. :D
