The Rich Aren’t Like You and Me…
…They’re worse. Or at least that’s what a lot of people think. Until, of course, their own ship comes in

What is it about money? We envy it, some of us kill for it, we look down our noses at it, some of us won’t have anything to do with it, and yet its place in the cultural consciousness is assured. Money, that is, can’t be overlooked, pro or con.

Freud, who had his own complex relationship with money, cultivating some patients solely in the hope of their *endowing his psychoanalytic endeavor, thought that wealth could never bring happiness because it didn’t answer an infantile wish—that its roots lay later on in human development.

Still, while blithely equating money with feces in the unconscious, he himself was not immune to its power: “My mood also depends very strongly on my earnings,” he wrote to a colleague. “Money is laughing gas for me.”

The problem with the rich is that they are exactly like everybody else. They are just as indifferent, just as greedy, just as criminal, just as lazy, and just as vindictive. They are also just as generous, just as involved, just as law-abiding, just as hard-working, and just as forgiving. They express those characteristics just like everybody else does, that is to say, to the limits of their personal resources.

Money doesn't change anybody for the worse or for the better but it's often easier to see character when money expands the scope of operations.

This is why it's important that we do not personalize problems of class conflict. We cannot say "rich people are bad let's get them", because it's not the people who are the problem, it's the system which they are embedded in.

I know I would be a much more generous person if I was rich.

Sure, but you have the impulse already and you already extend charity to the limits of your resources. That's what I mean - money doesn't make you good or bad, it just expands your scope for good or bad conduct.

If you suddenly came into 20 million dollars, would you become a vindictive, lying bitch? Unlikely. If you suddenly went on government money would you become a vindictive, lying bitch? Unlikely.

It's possible that in some cases (obviously not all), money can insulate children from crime, premature sex, and parental neglect and stupidity. But we're talking about lower middle class incomes, not elite incomes to get this outcome.

So, instead of directly attacking the rich, you attack the system that permitted them to become rich, while pretending not to attack them. But if you destroy the system that allows people to advance themselves, you might as well destroy the people who have advanced.

I agree with Wei Wu Wei in the sense that our government does pick winners, and there are companies getting rich off tax dollars because they know how to lobby politicians rather than know how to make a product and sell it to a customer for a profit. I believe such companies are parasites.

are we talking about the rich in government? Our elected officials that go in as upper middle class and come out as multi millionaires? All the while cementing their position and power and bank accounts while they tie the rest of us up in legislative change..i mean chains? Those rich people ARE worse.

Are they worse? These people can be voted out of office. What I think is worse is the people behind them who bribe thgem with all the money. There is no vote over who owns 50% of the nation, there is no vote over billionaires, there's nothing the American people can do about those who actually hold the power, who corrupt the politicians that enter washington, who lobby congress.
