LOS ANGELES -- Jack LaLanne, the fitness guru who inspired television viewers to trim down, eat well and pump iron for decades before diet and exercise became a national obsession, died Sunday. He was 96.
LaLanne died of respiratory failure due to pneumonia Sunday afternoon at his home in Morro Bay on California's central coast, his longtime agent Rick Hersh said.

LaLanne ate healthy and exercised every day of his life up until the end, Hersh said.

"I have not only lost my husband and a great American icon, but the best friend and most loving partner anyone could ever hope for," Elaine LaLanne, LaLanne's wife of 51 years and a frequent partner in his television appearances, said in a written statement.

He maintained a youthful physique and joked in 2006 that "I can't afford to die. It would wreck my image."

I'm 55 years old and remember watching him on TV when I was a kid. Man, this guy embarrassed a couple of generations of couch potatoes. RIP

A couple of times I saw those infomercials of his on the juicer. I guess he proved his point---living well til 96. RIP, he's helped a lot of folks.

96 is a good, long life. He was healthy for most of it, because he stayed in shape.

My grandpa is probably saying "another one I outlived".

Just heard this...Wow how sad. He's one of the reasons I try to eat healthier and exercise more.

He's was lifting weights and calling it a good thing when Doctors were telling us that it caused heart attacks. ;)

I just started doing this. Let me tell you it is an acquired taste, and you have to experiment to get things that taste good to you, but you feel so much better because you're taking in so much nutrients. I used to think it was baseless, but he was right about this.
Don't buy his juicer though...there are better ones that cost just a bit more, and it's a good investment

How sad - he really was an icon. He really focused on health over the long term. Almost all "fitness" proponents today make health a secondary consideration to sexual attraction or freakish looks. :(

My mom bought a juicer when I was a teenager (she was into all sorts of health foods back then), and I have traumatic memories of being offered liquified things that man was never meant to drink. I know that it is a healthy thing, but the memory of having to drink a chicken keeps me away from juicers.

I use my Lalanne juicer almost every day, and have for a few years. I have used more expensive juicers, including this one that retails for over $2 grand (http://www.norwalkjuicers.com/new-juicers). I still keep coming back to my Lalanne juicer. I can do my breakfast juicing and have it cleaned within about 5 minutes.

RIP Jack Lalanne. You have enriched my life, and the lives of millions of others.

When I get juiced, I prefer something a little stronger....
like with an umbrella.....

Rest in peace Jack. I can remember watching him as a kid
on the black and white tv and doing exercises along with him.
I always remember him saying "inhale" and the music scale
they'd play from low to high - and then he'd say "exhale" and
the same music scale going from high to low. He was a great
man with always a positive outlook on life.

He was a great man, and I will miss his great outlook, but I still refuse to drink a chicken.
