TENSIONS between supporters of embattled Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and opposition protesters have boiled over with violent clashes breaking out on Cairo's Tahrir Square, injuring more than 500 people.

Several thousand supporters of Mubarak, including some riding horses and camels and wielding whips, attacked anti-government protesters on Wednesday as Egypt's upheaval took a dangerous new turn.In chaotic scenes, the two sides pelted each other with stones, and protesters dragged at least six pro-Mubarak attackers off their animals and beat them.

Elsewhere, an angry crowd of anti-Mubarak protesters beat at least 10 pro-regime demonstrators with sticks.The turmoil was the first significant violence between supporters of the two camps in more than a week of anti-government protests.At least 10 people were injured in the initial confrontation, and bloody head wounds were visible on many
