Foreign and local journalists were beaten with sticks and fists by pro-government mobs on the streets of Cairo on Thursday and dozens were reportedly detained by security forces in what the U.S. called a concerted attempt to intimidate the press.

Foreign photographers reported a string of attacks by supporters of President Hosni Mubarak near Tahrir Square, the scene of vicious battles between Mubarak supporters and protesters demanding he step down after nearly 30 years in power.

"The Egyptian government is employing a strategy of eliminating witnesses to their actions," said Mohamed Abdel Dayem, the Committee to Protect Journalists' Middle East and North Africa program coordinator. "The situation is frightening, not only because our colleagues are suffering abuse but because when the press is kept from reporting, we lose an independent source of crucial information."

How exactly do they know that all these actions against the press are being done by pro Mubarek forces?
I find it hard to believe that the anti Mubarek forces are not getting a few licks of their own in, just that they are not being reported that way.

That's teh spin.

You know though. I'm gonna be magnanimous here for the good of all. I think i could stand the beheading of a few Journalists. As usual, third world goes after journalists first.

okay that was pretty bad and i really don't mean it. I don't want anyone to die...especially christians and i understand that GREG PALKOT has been beaten and hospitalized. Neither do i think these are pro-mubarak people. They are islamists....the moderate ones who get to hide behind the blatant radicalism of their more violent brothers. I do wish that journalists would recognize that they are the first to be eliminated in regime changes such as these.

I find it hard to believe that the anti Mubarek forces are not getting a few licks of their own in, just that they are not being reported that way. That's easy .The pro Mubarek forces carry banners saying so and are usually in the minority. The Muslim brotherhood beat the Mubarek forces and carry them off to be tortured.
They are all savages and quite capable in their extreme barbarism of decapitations or sexual mutilation.
