You've gotta do the soul when you can't do the notes. :D

When you compare her to Roseanne Barr, she did super.

I hate to break it to you, but Christina Aguilera is a great singer. Her problem is she leans too much toward vocal acrobatics and ends up gilding the lily, like she did tonight.

Bad performance on her part, but I'm sorry, that broad can sing.

That one wins in my book as the most horrid ever.

I agree , they should sing it straight. You never hear anyone warbling das deutschlandlied.

Maybe it's time to quit with the a capella and use backing instruments for the singing of the National Anthem.
There are very few singers of any caliber that can do it justice by themselves.

there are two thing the NFL needs to stop doing for their Super Bowl music

1) NEVER get a pop star to sing the National Anthem, they have almost always botched it

2) STOP THE STUPID BULLSHIT 1/2 TIME SHOWS. Hip-hop/rap/old rock stars all SUCK. Hardcore. Get some Country singers in there.

It's a tough song, in that it has a broad range, and there are a couple of high notes that are tough to hit, but any singer who can carry a tune can do a creditable version. The problem is that too many celebrities think that they have to put their stamp on it. If she'd just hit the notes, nobody would have had a problem.

I did not watch the pre game, half time or the post game crap. I want to see the game and that is it. Most of the half time shows are terrible.

Altering someone else's post and saying "fixed" or "ftfy" is not only the most lame retort on the Internets, it is like an ultrasound of the empty cranium that relies on such mechanisms to proffer an opinion. I'm just sayin'.

I can't stand it when these people make it about themselves. She could have just sung the song normally and not try to do scales on every stanza. I hate that crap. She sucked!

I disagree, but one should bold the section which has been altered.

My son and I got settled, food at the ready, waiting on the game. Then some dick hit the pole and knocked out power from just prior to the National Anthem till midnight. I think about 400 people where waiting to string him up on the new pole.

You are SO right. She did make it about her. Many of them do. Initially it was reported she flubbed a line so i didn't bother to listen...i thought. well, it's not a song sung EVERY day so i can excuse that. But it was more than that. She really STUNK up the place. They make the performance about them. I really resent that.

One time, a couple of the Red Wings' daughters sang it before a game and did a great job. Aretha has sung it at Detroit events and does a good job, but she usually follows it up with "Lift Every Heart and Sing". Karen Newman is the Wings' usual singer, and the Pistons used to have Thornetta Davis sing at theirs-she is a local blues singer who can really belt out a song.

Sometimes it's best to go with either a local favorite, or with a military choir-they know better than to mess it up.

I liked the half time show.

Here's my problem with this: If you are a professional singer, it's you're job to learn the lyrics, especially if you're going to be singing in front of the largest audience of your life. Not hitting a tough note happens, and I can forgive that, but not knowing the lyrics of the National Anthem, not rehearsing it, not dong the basic preparation for your job, is just unprofessional. If she'd been an American Idol contestant, she'd have been voted off.

Where's Simon Cowell when you really need him?

I will be the first one to admit that Christina has one hell of s set of pipes on her. The girl can sing with the best of them. Bust just like Sugar Ray Leonard always hung at the edge of defeat when he faced Thomas Hearns, Brian Bosworth could never tackle Bo Jackson, the National Anthem has Christina's number.

Sometimes you get what you pay for. Take Carl Lews, a great athlete. Singer? Not so much:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJLvCM4j2mg

But some athletes do have good voices like Jerry Stackhouse:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iQ2GVnJQ7QA&feature=related

But as for pop stars and the National Anthem, some are great. Whitney Houston's version is a standard no one will ever reach again(And was war time version to boot):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wupsPg5H6aE&feature=related

As was said, a blown note can be forgiven. Forgetting the words, not so much. Even a 7 year old can remember the words:
