Democratic Senators hold up budget bill by hiding from Capitol

Republicans in the State Senate prepared to approve Gov. Scott Walker’s budget repair bill today, but at the last minute, the Democrats in the Senate chose not to show up for the session, leaving the chamber without a quorum and putting the proposal in at least temporary limbo.

Twenty Senators are needed to be present to achieve a quorum. All 19 of the Republicans attended today’s 11 a.m. session. None of the Democrats attended.

Sources said the Democrats left the building before the Senate’s sergeant at arms was dispatched to look for them. The gallery in the Senate chamber erupted in applause when it was announced the quorom was not achieved.

NBC News 15 reported that the Democratic Senators have left the state.

Fox reports that the police are out looking for them under orders to "Drag them to the capitol" to vote on this bill.

Hey Wei, riddle me this little question.

Today there will be a hearing on Senate Bill 5 in Ohio – to do the same thing – end collective bargaining – and attaching healthcare, retirement and wages to be based on merit not a deal made.

I just have to ask – and wonder – why WI is being highlighted in the news, while OH isn’t? Hardly any word of OH's vote today.

It will be interesting to see how it goes today.

Running away and shirking responsibility equals "balls" to you?

Only a Libtard could make that connection with a straight face.

Senators are hiding and teachers are calling in sick. So much immaturity. These are supposed to be leaders and educators eh? Sorry, www, you lose. These actions are nothing but drama, and will accomplish nothing. That's not what elected officials are supposed to be doing, and their next round of elections will hopefully put them right where they evidently want to be, away from the capital.

Just for fun, I'd like to add, my wife, a woefully underpaid special ed teacher has gone to work very sick several times over this last month, because she knew that others had already called in sick (we've had a nasty flu bug floating around here, makes me kind of glad I'm not working and out among the public) and that if she called in, there wouldn't be enough people to take care of the students. And these 1000+ teachers are staging a "sick-out" so they can have the union give them more cookies? Y'all can shove it, if that's the extent of your compassion.

It's illegal in WI as well. Personally hope they all get their asses fired for it

It's also against the Wisconsin State Constitution for them to leave and not be there for a Quorum when its called

Same thing happened in Texas a few years ago during a redistricting vote. The Dem Congress critters lit out for Ardmore, Oklahoma.

The Governor sent the state police to bring them back.

Imagine the look on those protestors faces if the State Police made the Dem Senators do a perp walk right past them in handcuffs into the chamber for the vote.

Yeah, what happened to those roaches?

Perry sent the Texas Rangers to arrest them and bring them back. The Dem governor of Oklahoma at the time blocked them from doing it.

They eventually returned and had the vote. But not until they'd had a vacation at our expense and made a mockery of their job.

Via the FNC website:

The 14 Senate Democrats who are boycotting a vote on a controversial "union-busting" bill have left the state, a Wisconsin state senator said.
Sen. Jon Erpenbach says the group wants to force negotiations over the Republican-backed bill, which would strip most public employees of their collective-bargaining rights.
Erpenbach said that he and his colleagues had left Wisconsin, but he would not say where.
He said the plan is to slow down the bill because it's "tearing the state apart."

Then they should be impeached for failure to uphold the Wisconsin Constitution.

Sounds like WI might need a constitutional amendment. Something along the lines of, "If Senators don't want to do their jobs, find replacements who will do the job and meet the quorum."

Let these Senator's constituents go without representation for a vote or two and see how much hot water they get into back in their districts.
