Ginger Abuse: Tackling Redhead Harassment
What Would You Do If You Saw a Redhead Face Cruel Taunts?

Throughout the years, "What Would You Do?" has explored a multitude of situations involving intolerance and bigotry, including obesity, age, and gender issues. But have you ever heard of "ginger abuse?"

Ginger abuse is a form of bullying directed at people with red hair. It may be a relatively unknown type of harassment to many, but according to one young "What Would You Do?" viewer, it's an obstacle he faces on a daily basis.

Redhead Says, 'I Hate It'

Twelve-year-old Jonathan Gilsdorf of Rocklin, Calif., is one of three redheaded brothers. He wrote to "What Would You Do?" and told us he is constantly picked on at school because of his vibrant hair color.

"I don't feel good when they say that kinda stuff to me. I hate it," Gilsdorf said.

In his "How Would You Do It?" contest entry letter, Gilsdorf asked us to set up a scenario based on his situation. He wrote, "I am asking you guys if you could do a bit for me so I know that there are people out there who want to help." While Gilsdorf could not be considered an official contest entrant as he was not 21 years old, his letter struck a chord.

Staging Ginger Abuse

The "What Would You Do?" team took Gisdorf's plea to heart and decided to stage a situation involving ginger abuse. After multiple locations fell through and problems with the tumultuous winter weather, we finally set up our hidden cameras at Burger DeLuxe in Wayne, N.J. We hired Jeremy, an actor, to play the role of our redheaded high school student. While he sat at a table in the restaurant with a friend, a group of three actors playing the roles of bullies walked in and sat down next to him. Immediately, they took notice of the redhead and started taunting him with names like "Ginger" and "Carrot Top."

All red headed kids get teased just like the kids with glasses or the kids with birthmarks or whatever. By the time a kid is hitting puberty (and especially for girls), all that stops. Girls begin to receive a lot of very positive attention. As the girl grows up, she sees women paying several hundred dollars every 6 weeks to get imitation red hair. That's hardly discrimination - that's flattery.

It's the British who have some repulsive bigotry over hair color. Even there, it's primarily the English. Americans do not have this particular problem.

Where did the phrase 'beat you like a red-headed stepchild' come from and what does it mean?

Beating a Red-Headed Step-Child

I think all the explanations below are written by people trying to avoid the unpleasant and far more basic meaning:....A step child would get beaten more than a biological child. As redheads are traditionally disliked and picked on, a redheaded stepchild would get an even worse beating! Nasty, simple, basic.

I always heard it, "Treat you like a redheaded stepchild." and took it to be an exaggeration of the status of not belonging. Since my mother had a redheaded step child, it didn't seem to make a lot of sense and I only recall hearing it said by a great uncle who was generally regarded as an ass anyway.

I think it's more common as an English phrase than a standard American phrase. I never heard it until I ran across it in literature as an adult. I've heard/seen it used more in the last 5 years than I ever have before and it's still rare.

That's harsh. Many of them are buttugly, but as a group I thing that Australian aborigines and some Malay tribes hold the top spot on ugly.

Growing up, my hair was a very dark red, almost auburn color, but would bleach out a few shades lighter in the summer sun. If I had a dime for every time I heard "Red, red who shit on your head" during that time I could have retired years ago.

It started turning to its now distinguished silver when I was in my 30's and even though it does not make me look any younger, I'll take that over what I used to have.

But I still love red headed ladies...

My niece has a beautiful little red haired girl. When they went to China to get my favorite little girl's little Chinese sister, people asked if they could take her picture. She was a little celebrity wherever she went. Normally a shy child, she became adept at posing. So maybe redheads should visit China to get a major ego boost.

My little granddaughter, who is now almost 5 months old, is also a gorgeous little blue eyed, red haired baby. Redheads rule! My son has beautiful strawberry blond hair. I'd give anything to have that hair color (not from a bottle).

You've got to admit that culturally, you guys have much more antipathy toward red heads than we do here. I don't know if it's some lingering resentment against the Irish or the Scots but slurs against "gingers" make it into your popular press more than ours by a factor of 100:1. :p

I've noticed something about redheaded women over the years. They're either drop dead gorgeous or butt ugly. There seems to be no middle ground for redheads.

My redhaired sister was a hit in Spain and India. If she had married the Hindu, she'd now be a doctor's divorcee, he was nuts.

"That's harsh." another way of saying, "Revolting is such a strong word..."

So let me explain it to you so you can understand adult speech. Rock says, "... is revolting?" to which I reply , "Well, maybe not revolting, but they can be ugly." but because English is a colorful, flexible and poetic language, I don't have to reduce my expression to that which an idiot can understand, unless of course I intend to end up explaining it to an idiot, like now. I'll try to be more basic in what I say when you are reading.

I think there is an ethnic middle ground. If you take a plain red haired and complected woman and put her in some New York high fashion, she's probably going to look like a hooker or a zombie. But if you take the same woman and put her in Ren Faire garb, in the right colors of course, then you get a painting.

When I had braces, it was "carrot top metal mouth". There's always something that you get teased over.

I never heard the "like a red-headed stepchild" thing until I was older. I did hear the whole "milkman's child" thing, though, since we had a redhaired milkman in the neighborhood my family lived in at the time I was born.

When it came to redhair, I miss my own. I had dark redhair that darkened to brown in preschool, so I missed much of the ridicule. I had crushes on all the redheads in school, and the only person that I'd drop everything and marry tomorrow is a redhead in Minnesota who is grateful his copper mane is turning grey. I, of course, have a different opinion. I dyed my hair back when I was dancing. I asked a British customer what they had against redheads and he thought it was due to witch hunts in the medieval era. Sounds about right.

I didn't understand most of that stuff when I was a kid. A lot of people like to make excuses for "kids being kids" when they mean "kids being cruel" but it's really adults not properly parenting children. Hell, I got punished for stuff I didn't even do but in the process learned not to do it.

I watched the episode. It was rather sad. One of my nephews is a flaming redhead. His brothers call him "Fed-ex" (apparently a contemporary nod to the postman).

Orange headed kids got some guff in school, but no more than the fat kid, or the kid with coke bottle glasses, or the one with the overbite, or "Biz" the weird little girl with both the glasses and the unfortunate overbite.

It's just a thing to point out. Kids usually out grow it. I think Prince Harry is doing his part to help the gingers out in Great Britain.
