Scientist Hopes to Fix Giant Afghan Buddha

The world was shocked when two of the giant Buddhas, which date back to the sixth century, were demolished 10 years ago.... But University of Munich Professor Erwin Emmerling says one can be fixed. He has been travelling back and forth to Bamiyan with his team for the last five years, examining what is left of the destroyed Buddhas. ....There is now enough of the smaller one for them to be able to reassemble it in the niche in the cliff where it once stood.

I also hope so, but they'd be smart to relocate them, as the current Afghan government is not exactly Buddha-friendly, either. Otherwise, they'll just have to come back to reassemble it again in a few years.
