iPad 2: Thinner, Lighter, Faster, Available March 11

Today’s iPad 2 event didn’t disappoint. While there were no real surprises for people following the iPad 2 rumor mill, iPad 2 looks like a great upgrade over the original iPad. iPad 2 is thinner, lighter, and faster than the original iPad. Perhaps the biggest surprise is that it is going to be available in just 9 days.

Thinner

How much thinner is the new iPad? 33% thinner. The iPad has gone from 13.4 mm to just 8.8 mm. The iPad 2 is now even skinnier than the iPhone 4 which is 9.3 mm thick.

Lighter

Up to 15 percent lighter claims Apple. This should come as a relief to those who felt the original iPad was too heavy.

Faster

The iPad 2 is getting a new dual core processor dubbed the A5 (just as we predicted). Apple says this makes the processor twice as fast and the graphics performance 9 times faster. A ninefold increase is graphics performance is pretty crazy for one generation of improvement. Early hands on reports claim the new iPad is blazingly fast.

Cameras

The new iPad comes into line with the rest of the iOS family by getting front and rear facing cameras. The front camera is a VGA camera that can be used for facetime chats with other iPad, iPhone, iPod, and Mac users. There is also a neat photobooth app that allows you to take photos of yourself using the front camera. The rear camera can shoot 720p HD video.

iOS 4.3

The new iPad will come with the newest version of Apple’s mobile operating system iOS 4.3. This update enables better performance while using the Safari Internet browser, iTunes home sharing, Airplay improvements, and you can now turn the iPad mute switch back into the rotation lock if you so wish.

Other stuff

The iPad 2 also gets a gyroscope and will now be available in black or white (as reported earlier this week). Apple demonstrated new apps for iMovie and GarageBand for iPad. Both apps looked very impressive and both will be available the same day iPad 2 releases. I have been expecting iLife apps for iPad for awhile now. The only thing oddly absent was iPhoto for iPad. Finally, Apple announced a new smart covers for the iPad which act as a screen protector / case.

Is it still really neat but almost utterly pointless technology?

Sorry, I love my macs but I don't see what this pad is for, unless it's for kids in which case it's a gameboy.

If they would integrate a Bluetooth-type phone capacity in this baby, I'd be sold. They finally put cameras in it which was my other main interest.

I want to read books, surf the internet, take pix of laughable street people, and call 911 during a bar fight and I want to do all of that with only one device. And that device had better look cool or cute. :)

The Camera free models are extremely useful in an education setting - or at least could be. Imagine: NO MORE TEXTBOOKS! Everything is installed on their iPad - or what ever other model people choose. I for one like the new Motorola one. :)

Why don't they integrate a phone in these things? (Not iPads necessarily but in this type of device.)

But now I don't buy any so buying just the one would still net them a sale they don't have today.

yes - but they would loose so many people who have all three if they merged them into one. your one purchase against the thousands who have all three? Who do you think is gonna win out? :p

Isn't it a little big for a phone?

I can't stand chunky phones. I like a flip phone.

I dunno, I don't use personal cell phones. I own one (now) but the minutes on it ran out March 1st so it's basically a 911 device for me. I don't see why they couldn't make a Bluetooth-type of phone for it. That eliminates the chunkiness factor.

i still use an oldschool phone that only makes calls and sends texts and that's it because i don't need to waste thousands of dollars on shiny toys because i'm not 8 years old anymore

still though, i admit those touch screen devices are fun to play with

Your argument while appealing fails to convince .Make a pitch to the Apple marketing types !If they pack every feature into the pad it would disturb their little product flow charts !They also need 4G and more disk space .What is this fixation Apple has with thin ?
All it does is impress the mod squad and adds more problems to battery manufacturers and more expense to replacement .
Ask for a side mounted case option with a flap in western saddle leather that doubles as a shoulder bag with a pocket for the phone !

I would want to use it on run so the lightweight and thin profile are appealing. I'd probably buy the shoulder bag you describe if I had all the devices. :D

Thinner, lighter and faster could have described a sanitary napkin as well and with a name like iPad, it would be easy to confuse the two.
However, the iPad is the less useful of the two.

completely agree...$500-900 for basically a giant Ipod touch/Iphone without the phone. not sure if Apple should be hated or applauded for creating demand for something that people weren't asking for nor a need was there...

Obviously, the need is there or people wouldn't want them. I'm no Apple fan-boi but I immediately see the usefulness of this device.
