U.S. Troops Finally Get Pizza Hut Back in Afghanistan

by Jason Best, Posted Feb 22nd 2011 @ 2:00PM

Hoping for a quick end to the war in Afghanistan? Well, when you look at how long it took the military to reopen a Pizza Hut at a base near Kabul, you might have to rethink your definition of "quick."

As Slashfood reported way back in September, the current commander of U.S. and coalition forces in Afghanistan, Gen. David Petraeus, decided to lift the fast-food ban on coalition bases that had been implemented by his famously no-nonsense predecessor, Gen. Stanley McChrystal. According to the Wall Street Journal, McChrystal viewed fast food as an "unnecessary luxury," and he told senior officers that he "didn't want to be the first American general to tell a grieving mother that her son died delivering frozen pizza."

It didn't take long for Gen. Petraeus to reverse course, however, citing the morale-boosting impact of, say, a simple Whopper with fries. Yet it appears to be proof positive that the Pentagon does nothing in short order that it's taken five long months for troops to get their first slice of Meat Lover's pie.

Last week, the Pizza Hut at Camp Phoenix "fired up its ovens and opened its doors to anxious service members wanting a 'taste of home,'" enthused a statement from U.S. Forces-Afghanistan.

But there was little word as to why, exactly, it took an organization of highly trained specialists who are masters of some of the most sophisticated technology known to man five months to install a couple of ovens in a converted trailer and start tossing dough.

I heard about this from my friend over there. She was quite excited, as pizza is one of her favorite foods.

If it's the same contracter that had Pizza Hut at Manas, then their better off without. The food was alright, but they where charging $11 for a personal pan pizza. It was stupid.

They have a TGI Fridays in KAF. It's ok...if you like paying $20 for a burger and fries.

Well, for a real burger I woulda paid that price. I was so sick of DFAC burgers when I left there.

I didn't do much Pizza Hut or BK at Balad, but we had some really good DFACs. I did go for the Baskin Robbins a few times, but that was the extent of my non-DFAC eating.

Arifjan, OTOH, has Hardee's/Carl's Jr, which is worth going out of my way for. We need to get Whattaburger over there.

Should we start sending pizza or pepperoni/salami to ya'll?

Pizza Hut isn't my idea of good pizza, but the younger troops seemed to enjoy it from what I saw in the AOR. If it reminds them of home, then I'm glad they got it back. I agree that the DFAC was outstanding, especially where I spent my tour. They spare little expense. It was a shining beacon of coolness and refreshment. An oasis in the heat. The fresh fruit and salad bar was great. They went all out on holidays.

Pizza Hut is pretty bad, compared to the NY pizza that you can get on any street corner, but ultimately, pizza is like sex, in that even when it's bad, it's not that bad. Of course, by that analogy, Little Caesar's is rape.
