They've been showing Cleopatra on cable pretty frequently over the past week or two.

My favorite of her movies is the version of The Taming Of The Shrew that she made with Richard Burton. They were so obviously in love when they filmed it. I also always liked Suddenly, Last Summer because it is just so bizarre.

Actress Elizabeth Taylor has passed away at the age of 79. ABC News has confirmed that Taylor died of congestive heart failure this morning at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

Taylor’s career in Hollywood spanned five decades. She was nominated for five Oscars and she took home the award for Best Actress for her riveting performances in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and BUtterfield 8. While she retired from acting in 2001, she was one of Hollywood’s greatest legends and one of the most in-demand stars of the 1950s and 60s. In 1985, she devoted herself to fund-raising and activism against AIDS and the family asks that in lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation. Our deepest condolences go out to Ms. Taylor’s friends and family. Hit the jump for a statement from her son Michael Wilding.

Taylor’s son Michael Wilding released an official statement:

“My Mother was an extraordinary woman who lived life to the fullest, with great passion, humor, and love. Though her loss is devastating to those of us who held her so close and so dear, we will always be inspired by her enduring contribution to our world. Her remarkable body of work in film, her ongoing success as a businesswoman, and her brave and relentless advocacy in the fight against HIV/AIDS, all make us all incredibly proud of what she accomplished. We know, quite simply, that the world is a better place for Mom having lived in it. Her legacy will never fade, her spirit will always be with us, and her love will live forever in our hearts.”

Yes, she helped take thet stigma off of aids and focus the blame off of the gays that were spreading it.

I bet Nova is besides himself now that she has passed. :D

I have to admit that I never realized just how beautiful she was until looking at the various photo montages of her now.

There is another thing about Taylor that no one ever seems to talk about, and that is her extraordinary athletic ability.
There is a scene in Giant, I think, (Could have been Raintree County)where she was required to run up the stairway and confront a male actor at the top. It was shot in one continuous motion, and I'm telling you she bounced up those stairs like a deer! She then delivered her lines without being out of breath at all. Easy? Try it.
And those horse riding scenes from her younger years. Can you ride like that? I never could.

She was marvelous in many ways.

It's just so important that people who are dying of a horrible disease be stigmatized and blamed.

Elizabeth Taylor did a great job as far as helping to raise money for AIDS research and treatment, but nothing removed the stigma on the sufferers until Magic Johnson announced he was HIV+. Once a notoriously promiscuous heterosexual got it, the stigma was gone.

They should be blamed AIDS is 100% preventable disease (cept for getting through blood donations) thats the problem today shame was removed from a lot of things like have kids before marriage, welfare and what not. They should be stigmatized and maybe tomorrow someone wont engage in that behavior.

I'll give her credit for this, if it's true:

Elizabeth Taylor Offered to Be Hostage, Dinitz Discloses
June 16, 1977
LOS ANGELES (JTA) — Movie actress Elizabeth Taylor offered herself as a hostage for the more than 100 Air France hijack victims held by terrorists at Entebbe Airport in Uganda during the tense days before the Israeli rescue raid last July 4. That disclosure was made here by Israel’s Ambassador to the United States, Simcha Dinitz, at a Jewish National Fund gala honoring Ms. Taylor and her husband, John W. Warner, for their devotion to the land reclamation work of the JNF and other humanitarian causes.

Cervical cancer is now mostly preventable, since the discovery that most of it is actually caused by an STD (HPV). Should we stigmatize the women who have it, since they probably got it because either they or their partners had unprotected sex with someone who was infected?

Which member of the Phelps family are you? They're going to need you at Liz's funeral.
