In terms of whom? In McCain's case, definitely yes. All of the info we have from the campaign suggests McCain wanted to pick Lieberman as his VP but was dissuaded (correctly) due to the probable disaffection of the whacky-whacky vote. Given that he couldn't pick Joe, he decided to reject the recommendations to go with the Mittster and made an "out-of-the-box" pick.
In terms of bouncy Bristol? I don't know. To know that, I'd have to know how 17 years of innoculation in "family values," "abstinence," and "morality" worked. Oh, wait.... never mind.

Hey! Would you have not voted for McCain if he had chosen Lieberman as his VP? Somehow, I think that you would have still voted for him, as I will almost certainly vote for him despite the fact that he's chosen Palin. That makes us both definitely not whacky-whackies.

No, your statement betrays the fact that, as most extremists, you see the world in two shades: "us" or "them," "conservatives" or "lefties." However, in fact, there are many more shades than you chose, in your narrow, parochial view of life, to acknowledge. To paraphrase a popular song, "I'm a little bit right, a little bit left." Those people do exist and, perhaps they are the majority. In any case, they are the swing, as neither side -- the DUmmies or the Whacky-Whackies -- can win without us.

Actually, he was and he wasn't. :D
Centrists are not people who have no opinions or opinions that facilate ("flip-flop"). The majority are simply people whose opinions don't fit into the shoebox of either left or right. Like many, many centrists, for example, I believe in personal responsibility, a sound fiscal policy, a strong national defense, civil liberties, limitations on government intrusion into personal behaviour, and the right of privacy. While neither right nor left share all of my beliefs, that doesn't mean I don't have strong beliefs.

Yeah, but that doesn't make you a centrist, it makes you a Libertarian. There really aren't any centrists. Lieberman certainly isn't. He's a very liberal senator, who has one conservative position, which is the war on terror. BTW, I don't believe that McCain wanted him as his first choice as veep. He's certainly an honorable man (something that you can't say about very many Democrats, which is probably why he no longer is one), but McCain is already strong on defense. He didn't need Lieberman, he needed a veep who wasn't business as usual, someone who would motivate the base and attract attention, but who could also handle the attention. Palin was the perfect choice.

No. You're incorrect on several points. First, as I indicated, I may still vote for the ticket. However, previously I was going to vote for the ticket. Notice the difference.
Secondly, the pro-life issue is simply the most visible issue with which I disagree with the ticket. I also disagree as to gay marriage, the teaching of creationism as sicence in public schools, and others.
Clearly, much of Palin's (and resultingly McCain's) resurgent popularity lies in the revival of the so-called "class wars." Well, fair enough. That may attact a lot of voters who are "small town," "values-oriented," etc., etc., it also disaffects voters who are not. Republicans may wish to make that trade and that's fair enough. But don't be disingenous enough to, while playing that card, whine about losing the other side of the equation.
Everything about Palin repulses me, from her adamant pro-life stance, to her family values (which worked so well with her own family she wants to bestow them upon the rest of us), to her lack of knowledge regarding the larger world, to her good old gal (reminding one of Elmer Gantry) appeal.
So, no. I'm not like many here, i.e., a single issue voter on the issue of abortion. To me the abortion issue is really a minor one as I don't think it will ever be illegal in this country again. And, even if it were and, in the very unlikely event I should ever know someone in need of that service, I can very well afford plane fare to anywhere in the world. My issue with Palin is more general as she represents a lot of things I think are wrong with America. However, whether or not that's enough to make me vote for Ron Paul still remains to be seen.

I really don't understand your reference to Republicans and class wars. That's clearly a tactic the democrats use, and usually to their advantage. Now, if you're talking about pitting small town, conservative values against, big city liberalism, I don't think that's necessarily a "class" war. McCain is most likely using that tactic to shore up his base, but he knows it's not going to win the election for him.

Your aversion to Palin, and its ferocity surprises me. When I saw the way people on the left reacted to her, I did as much research as I had time for to see what the furor was all about. But in all frankness, there's nothing out there that would seem to cause her to be such a lightning rod for liberal scorn. She's not the only pro-life candidate and there's nothing to show she was a particularly fiesty crusader for that position. She didn't make it a primary focus to force schools to teach abstinence only or give up sex ed, and despite your repeated assertions, there's no history of her forcing her values on anybody.
I agree that she seems to lack experience and her selection was surprising. I only enjoy it because it shook things up and was a bold gamble. Politics gets predictable and has been too boring for some time now. But I think McCain has an uphill battle anyway. The bottom line seems to be that you are actually angry that a republican picked a conservative to be his running mate. I don't see the anyone on the left angry that Obama didn't pick someone more moderate like a Bob Conley or Zell Miller.

But you still don't get the concept of the center. I don't care who Obama picked, as I wouldn't vote for Obama anyway. He disagress with my position on the important issues of national defense and running the economy. It's simply not a comparison, for me at least, and for many centrists as to "what Obama did." Rather, it's the desire for a truly centrist ticket. With McCain, we at least had that possibility. McCain's only "wedge issue" was abortion and, as all the whacky-whackies sensed, he doesn't really give a s**t about that issue.
However, by picking a candidate from the far right, he may have chosen a winning strategy (he may not have as today's events are quickly taking the focus off of Palin), but he has forfeited any pretense of moderation. Someone who believes in those things I enumerated in my last post -- pro-life, creationism, abstinence-only education, anti-gay marriage -- is simply not in the mainstream of the population. Such is life and the perils of politics.

What you need to do is organize moderates. Start with a catchy slogan and build support. I'll help you with the slogan:
What do we want? Moderation!

The events of the last two days have taken Sweet Sarah off the front pages. McCain's "fundamentally sound" response is seen as idiotic (which it is). No one's standing in line to ask Palin about her opinions regarding the trading of MBSs or exotic derivatives. We'll see who needs the moderates at the end of the day.

When he made the comment - with what was known - he was right. We were still experiencing economic growth - and no one knew how bad things really are. Kinda happens when people cook the books. And what are the names of the people who cooked the books and how many charges have been brought against those people?
EITHER WAY - this is a topic for another thread in another section of the forum. Can we please get back to HUMOR???

I don't think we've had sound economic fundamentals for a very long time. Ever since our philosophy changed to "spend spend spend". Ever since we had Presidents that said the patriotic thing to do in a crisis was to go out and spend money as if nothing happened. Ever since we had those quaint, old fashioned values of frugality, thrift and delayed gratification, that made our country prosperous and strong. Ever since personal debt levels grew so high.
But I am interested, dear sir, in what the "moderate" solution is to improving our fundamentals, and which candidate you believe comes closest to getting it right.

I really, really hope you're joking. To make that statement after Behr Stearns, after Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, after 10 bank failures this year, after a record number (at least in the last 30+ years) of foreclosures, after oil prices breaking $140 and gas prices over $4.40, after, after, after, is a senile, idiot's play.

I'm looking for a caricature which I'm certain was posted at this forum about 4-5 months ago. It depicts Obama out in a dumpster, hitting aborted fetuses with a baseball bat, saying "Just making sure they're all dead". I couldn't find it in this thread – do any of you remember where it was posted?

I know I dont like it when the DUmmys claim we are all redneck racist because we are republicans, but by your logic it's a fact because one guy posted a racist cartoon. Stereotypes are bullshit from BOTH sides.
