Air Force One executed a missed approach on its first attempt to land today at Bradley Field in Connecticut, circling the airport before making a successful landing on the second try.

The FAA said visibility was “below the minimum,” meaning the pilots couldn’t see the runway from the altitude required for landing due to thick cloud cover.

They were coming in to Runway 6 on instrument approach. Weather at the field at the time was overcast with visibility of 1.5 miles and cloud ceiling 300 feet to 1000 feet variable.

Sources said the attempt was not a touch-and-go or dramatic...

I'm looking at the observations. I wonder what FAA meant by the airfield being below visibility minimums, because it wasn't. Mins is surface vis of 1/2 of a mile. They had 1 and 1/2.

*shrugs* They don't let any spring chicken fly that plane, so I'm sure they had a good reason for it.

Depends on the IFR category of approach, type of approach and the observed weather from the pilot's perspective. I have flown many times when a PIREP was called in that I didn't agree with. Shortly after the PIREP, a weather observation was issued that reflected the PIREP.
