The height of idiocy: Two F-16s scrambled as United Airlines flight is forced in to emergency landing... after passengers get into a fight over a reclined seat

A United Airlines flight was forced into a dramatic emergency landing that cost the taxpayer thousands after two passengers started a fistfight over a reclined seat, it has emerged. Fighter jets were scrambled with two F-16s escorting Flight 990 as it dumped fuel to lessen its weight in order to land on Sunday night.

The Boeing 767, from Washington's Dulles Airport bound for Accra in Ghana, had 144 people on board when the fight broke out, a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman said. Government officials confirmed that fighter jets were scrambled from Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland.

Why didn't the flight attendants sort this out?

they were probably scrambled because the airline didn't tell them what it was about and they just made assumptions.

Until they knew exactly what was going on they had to consider the possibility that it was someone trying to take over the plane. 911 won't happen again the way it did the first time.

Better to come down on the side of caution when there's a ruckus in the air.

Once the incident had come to blows, I suspect that the flight attendants had few options. Assuming that one of them had the physical strength and skills to subdue two violent passengers, they'd have exposed the airline to all sorts of liability. They are probably under standing orders to simply report the incident and only act in self defense.

True. The captain/flight crew needs to quickly paint an accurate picture of what the "ruckus" is. Those F-16's are there for one reason. It would be a shame to have them splash an airliner over a couple of testosterone laden drunks.

Most flight attendants are female and small, as well. You could switch to all male flight attendants. Sure, they'd still be gay, but they'd be so big even Bailey wouldn't mouth off to them. :D

The guys causing the disturbance should be fined as part of their sentence, for the approximate cost of the fuel and wages of the personnel involved in scrambling the jets.

Or they could use Lindanumbers and if they are in any way grammatically challenged she'll probably bore them into submission. (but they dont hire old people so there goes that idea) :(

LOL, hey they could preempt all attempts at causing trouble by doing this at the being of a flight, put everyone to sleep :D

I hope none of that dumped fuel went into the gulf, it'll destroy fishing there for 50 years.

Just 50? Crap, I was told that the gulf would never be viable in my lifetime.

I was thinking .45's, but there is that whole airframe issue to deal with.

I know! The blow gun. Flight attendants could whip one out
and very silently inflict a tranquilizer dart on unruly passengers
from afar. Other passengers would think they'd just gone to sleep.

Blowgun is good, as is the tazer. Perhaps a combination of the two, plus a couple of stiff shots from the drink cart? Or better yet...

Those could come in handy in a lot of circumstances. I went to a "Quaker Style" funeral once, where anyone in attendance could get up and speak of the deceased. It was a funeral for a coworker who died suddenly.

Several people from the office got up and said some very nice things. The minute one of our crazier people got up, my friend next to me looked at me and we both whispered "uh, oh". She was very inappropriate, and I whispered to my friend "Quick, get the tranquilizer dart gun!".

I whole-heartedly agree....
