View Full Version : "Gay Bar Bans 'Predatory' Straight Woman "

A GAY venue in Collingwood has won the right to ban women to ensure its patrons are not subjected to attempts by predatory females to turn them straight.

VCAT has granted Sircuit Bar in Smith St an exemption to anti-discrimination laws, allowing it to ban women because they make the men uncomfortable.

"The applicant primarily relies on the exemption to exclude women from the venue, other than on Sundays after 3pm," VCAT reasoned.

"This is to ensure that gay men are not subject to attempts to change their sexuality, which reduce their comfort in the venue, which includes being fully accepted for who they are."

Despite the ruling, a spokesman for the venue said the club had never had a problem with women trying to turn gay men straight.

"We haven't had that problem here. But it does happen that women try and turn gay men straight," said the general manager, who wanted to be known only as Steve.

End of sidebar. Return to start of sidebar.

"When I was at high school and came out, plenty of my girlfriends said come with me and I'll turn you straight. You'd have to ask VCAT why they made the ruling."

Sircuit is a two-level nightclub that includes pool tables, a maze, movie lounges, private rooms and a wash area.

That's weird. Never heard of straight women going to gay bars to convert the men. They go to have girls night drinking, dancing, etc away from crowds of predatory men - gay bars are safer.

Which, ironically enough, makes gay bars a prime spot to meet straight ladies.

Dont forget a lot of these men are Bi and they love spreading HIV to straight women. That would be a good service if the women can turn these man from their perverted path back to playing on the right team, they shouldn't be banned but encouraged.

Private clubs have been able to do that already, haven't they?

You didn't know one of my college roommates. She was always trying to seduce gay men, it was sort of the ultimate challenge to her. She saw priests the same way. She also liked girls. Patty was pansexual. I kicked her out after she tried to sleep with my boyfriend.

While I agree with you Ginger, we both know what would happen if a singles bar said no transgendered/crossdressers allowed because the men and women want to be sure that the person they are hitting on/getting hit on by are the gender they claim to be.

Even then private clubs have been sued because they exclude people. Remember all of the men only clubs that were under fire by the femnazis?

I just read Title II of The Civil Rights Act of 1964 and could not find a prohibition of gender discrimination. I am really not sure on it, to be honest.

Makeovers. :D

I just read Title II of The Civil Rights Act of 1964 and could not find a prohibition of gender discrimination. I am really not sure on it, to be honest.
That's because Title VII and Title IX deal with gender discrimination, but only in employment and education. The precedent that applies here is the case of Boy Scouts of America v. Dale, which established that a private organization had a right to freedom of association. In this case, the Boy Scouts of America had dismissed a scout leader who was openly homosexual. The decision stated that "Forcing a group to accept certain members may impair the ability of the group to express those views, and only those views, that it intends to express...the presence of Dale as an assistant scoutmaster would … interfere with the Boy Scouts' choice not to propound a point of view contrary to its beliefs."

BTW, I happen to think that the bar owners are within their rights, but given another precedent, which is the NJ State Civil Rights Commission's harrassment of eharmony.com, which was a dating service whose expressly stated mission was to connect singles for the purpose of marriage, and which didn't take male to male or female to female ads because such marriages were not recognized, the precedent has been established that you cannot bar a patron based on gender or orientation, so the bar owners may not be legally safe. Sauce for the goose...

That's why I went to Title II, because it deals with businesses.

If it is a private club.

In this case, the Boy Scouts of America had dismissed a scout leader who was openly homosexual. A good decision. Also applies to their ability to discriminate on the basis of religion as well.

On a side note, I have always found it odd that defenders of the Boy Scouts of America bristle at that organization being characterized as discriminatory when they went to the Supreme Court to ensure their right to discriminate.

Weird.

Read the article. This is not a gay bar, it's a "bathhouse". Have you ever been to a bar with private rooms, a maze, and a "wash area"?

I've never known a bathhouse to have problems with females wanting to attend, but I suppose it's possible as definitions of hip and fun things to do change over time.

As a rule, though, efforts to exclude women from gay male venues are intended to exclude lesbians and straight men. Straight women often start off going to gay clubs with gay men, and then start getting straight dates to bring them there. Some straight guys like the attention, some just take up space, and some are obnoxious. Other (and I've always thought clever) straight men have discovered that some of the best looking and most fun straight women can be found in gay dance bars. And there are a few straight men who just like to dance.

I have always found that the mixed bars were the most fun. You really can't be the #1 club in town (and it's usually a gay club that is) and be too exclusive. Door policy is an art.

I don't understand how it went to the commission if the venue itself didn't ask for an exception.

Well, yes, if "wash area" means "restroom" (although I've never been to a bar with a maze, but then, after a few shots, I've thought that I was). The article called it a bar. But, if the wash area is, in fact, a bathing area, then they are at least partially a bath house. Regardless, the freedom of association precedent applies. They have as much right to decide who they want to rub elbows (or anything else, for that matter) with as the Boy Scouts.

If you aren't feeling mildly threatened AND aroused, why would a woman ever want to be in the presence of a naked man at all? No offense guys but most women just don't have any automatic response to random naked men other than laughter. :p

I guess I'm not most women. If a guy is attractive enough, I kinda want to see the full monty. If this is a bathhouse banning bi/straight women, okay -- I get it. Nothing more disconcerting to reach for something in the dark and not find it. If I get flustered looking for my glasses , lord nows what a hopped up on poppers guy would be like. <snickers>

Besides, I'm more of a let's have drinks and shoot pool type of chick, so a bathhouse isn't my type of place to observe gay behavior in the wild, lol. Gay sports bars are better. :p

Not always orgies from what I'm told.

Why would straight/ bi women go to a bathhouse? Bette Middler got her start as a singer in one. But this is probably why------------>Yaoi Fangirl (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/YaoiFangirl)

I went to a gay bar/club many years ago with a group of friends from work. We started out at a dinner/club called Mango's in Fort Lauderdale. A few blocks down, was a gay club called Cathode Ray's. We were all drunk and I decided to satiate my curiosity to see what these gay clubs were like. So we all went.
The music was amazing and we all had a great time. I didn't try to steal any gay men away from the gay men....but I did have a woman try to make a pass at me.:o Thankfully, my buddy spanked me in arse and said "she's my bitch"..LOLLL...oh the memories.:D

Isn't a bathhouse just a place to have gay orgies? Why would straight women even want to go?

There is a fairly broad range of clubs and businesses operating under the title "bathhouse". It might amuse you to know that the major bathhouses in the US are generally assumed to be owned by or operated under the protection of the Italian Mafia.

Some of them are like a cross between a bar, a gym, and a hotel. Many have theaters, private rooms, group rooms, and some even have stages and galleries. Some are really nice, but most are pretty basic.

There have been some successful heterosexual bathhouses, but it's a much more difficult dynamic as women (gay or straight) tend to like such scenes less than men (who are generally pigs regardless of orientation).

San Francisco has two major heterosexual clubs, one of which is a private club of the Hells Angels, and another of which is notorious for all the crazy stuff you see on TV like bondage, pony girls, and other kink.

No, it was on Las Olas blvd. From what I remember(long time ago) it was inside establishment only. Bartenders dressed like Playboy, with no shirts. Patrons were mostly men, but women also.
