My son is over visiting with me for the weekend.
We are roasting - literally it was 106 today and we've been out roaming around.
Just got in and about to sprawl out under the full blast AC and watch a movie.
Just had Outback steaks for dinner. :)

The compressor on my back-up AC unit decided to stop coming on this afternoon.
It took me two hours, but I found the receipt. I'm pretty pleased with myself.
In the process, I filled a kitchen trash can with outdated trash from my desk.

I'm expecting my mom's central to go out sometime this summer. I've been looking at "mini split" systems. After spending way too much money to put central in this house, only to discover that I prefer the wall unit, I have vowed to never buy a central AC system again. I understand that there are a variety of factors in play, but to keep my house as comfortable with the central system, as I do with the wall units, would double my AC bill. A mini split would probably pay for itself at Mom's.

When I was a kid I wanted to live in the Treasure Island Howard Johnsons. I also wanted to be a car hop at the Varsity Grill in Atlanta. The commute would be rough.

My electric bill dropped in half when I quit using central.
We just bought one of these from Amazon, i like it real well.

You don't want to know what I'm paying each month for electricity here. Even during the winter when AC is not running I'm willing to bet my monthly bill is 4 times higher then yours.
But along with the main topic of the thread, whats up with the near dead forum?

Thanks for mentioning those. Frankly, I never gave them a good look; I just looked at them and assumed that they were some kind of Mickey Mouse technology that wouldn't survive (rather like ductless kerosene heaters). But looking at them, it would appear that the price has come down while the functionality has grown up. I mentioned it to my mother, and could tell that knowing that there was an alternative a huge replacement ordeal was a great relief. Her central compressor really does sound like it's on its last legs, the inside guts is in the rafters of the garage where I can barely get to it, and she has had two corrosion/vibration caused failures in the freon line in the last two years.
So how many units do you use, and how much in dollars have you saved? If I may ask. Her summer bill sometimes hits $400/mo. I'm thinking two 12,000 btu Whytner heat/cool units; one in LR-COMBO , one in family room.

I have one like the link and two little 5000 btu units, It's nice because you can keep the room you're in cooler than other areas. I'm all electric and it costs me 150.00 per month for 1100 square feet.

The built in HDD is a massive help, as you first record it to the HDD first, then you can go in and perfectly clean it up, divide up segments as you like, label each section, then when your happy, burn it to the DVD.
Standard DVD on that can hold about 8 hours of play time, real nice.
Plus the HDD can also allow the system to serve as a TiVo system. And you don't have to pay the monthly prem to use it.

An excuse to put up where I've been for a while. :D I'm halfway through week three of a seven week academy to become a correctional officer in the great state of Arizona (for a private prison :) ) Not sitting on my butt at home all day looking at the same spam want ads cuts into my internet time greatly, but I've learned some nifty new pain compliance holds and strikes. (why is there no evil smiley?)

How's it going so far? And let me give you a nickel's worth of free advice. Take whatever you learn in the academy with a grain of salt. It's all by the numbers in there. When you get to the job, watch and learn. And believe me, if you're in an area where you have to keep a count of any tools, take the time to count them properly before letting the person you're relieving go. If they catch feelings, let them. And do not allow yourself to become complacent. I'm no hard ass but I'm no idiot either but I allowed myself to get lazy and it nearly cost me dearly. Good luck though and don't be afraid to ask questions. Big Guy is another CO here as well.

It's going. Self-defense was the most intense thing thus far, and I got through it. I was worried enough about the two minute drill (simulated fight for life) that the actual event wasn't as hard as I imagined. The classroom stuff is getting dull. I know the policies and practices are there for a reason, and we need to know them, but.... All the various trainers have been very up front about the fact that most of our training won't really start until we hit the yard, and they just cant teach most of what you really need out there in a classroom. And they are really stressing all the same things you are, for a few reasons. The prison is still under a microscope because they had an escape last year. That plus, they are having trouble getting qualified people hired and keeping them. The labor pool out here sucks, especially for work like this that has high standards (clean records, passing psych and physical tests). It's going to be an interesting ride, I know that for sure.
