Rep. Anthony D. Weiner has told friends he plans to resign his seat after coming under growing pressure from his Democratic colleagues to leave the House in the wake of revelations of his lewd online exchanges with women, the New York Times is reporting.

The news comes as Democratic leaders prepared to hold a meeting on Thursday to discuss whether to strip the 46-year-old New York congressman of his committee assignments, a blow that would severely damage his effectiveness, the paper says.

Weiner, a Democrat, came to the conclusion that he could no longer serve after having long discussions with his wife, Huma Abedin, when she returned home on Tuesday after traveling abroad with her boss, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, the Times reports.

Only because he's being told to, not that it's the right thing to do.

To late NH lindanumbers beat you to it. :(

I am sure you are in high dudgeon over the loss of your most favorite Congresscriter. I am sure if you troll the local bath houses you can find a man of equal character as Weiner.

The truly sad thing for Weiner in all this is he didn't even get laid.

I'm going to do an about-face on this one.

My original position was that what Weiner did was stupid, but it was harmless and PR stupid, not any serious breach of anything that matters to his job. I didn't call for the resignation of the guy in Connecticut (also a Congressman) and I wasn't going to call for Weiner to resign. Let's face it, in a nation of divorced people there aren't many to throw stones when it comes to real or conceptual infidelity.

My mom always said (when I was the subject and nuns were the rule) that it sucks to be made an example of. Well, it does, but it's how things are done in a civil society.

Hopefully we all tell our kids not to post pictures of themselves on the internet, and here is an educated man in high position who doesn't obey this rule? And he's paying the consequences. Good.

The even sadder thing is he not only will be unemployed, but probably now such a black sheep with even his own party that he might not get one of those cushy think tank jobs.

Does anyone know if he still gets that House pension if he resigns? It could be why he was trying to hang on til the bitter end.

I was just being glib. To be honest, I don't particularly care. It is all just gossipy fun for the whole family; the kind of thing that just makes me sad about the shallow end of our cultural pool.

No demons for me, just an acknowledgement that there are others in congressional representation who have their own share of things to hide.

If the Governor of New York could get a job on CNN after using a hooker(s) this guy should be able to scare up a job at a liberal think tank. :D

From Fox News.com:

At a minimum, the New York Democrat is eligible for a basic pension worth about $37,000 a year once he hits the retirement age -- not counting other odd-and-ends benefits. The benefits are afforded to every member of Congress who meets the basic requirements, and Weiner would be no exception.

Granted, the 46-year-old congressman is at least a decade away from being able to claim his pension. But under federal rules, once he reaches 56, Weiner could pull in a portion of that annuity. If he waits until he reaches 62, the basic package would be worth the full $37,000, with cost-of-living adjustments kicking in after that.

Must be nice to pull that in, plus whatever graft he managed to generate. :(

His wife will get it as alimony and child support after they are divorced in the near future.

After a turgid defense of his deviance, Wiener succumbes to pressure, gets the shaft.

Are you kidding? He'll go into rehab, emerge onto the talk show circuit and end up back in politics as an appointee to a bunch of commissions, following which he will make another go at getting elected to something.

No, a package of Oscar Mayer weiners.

CNN is missing a bet. They should get Weiner to co-host a show with Spitzer about political scandals. They could call it "Below the Beltway."

Or failing that, there are other things for a disgraced politician to do with himself and his weiner and not go blind:

Open a chain of Weiner's Schnitzel restaurants.
Take a job as Pauly Shore's understudy. Buhhhh..DY!

Sell "Weinercize" DVDs. Slogan: Let Anthony Weiner pump you up!"

Spokesman for "natural male enhancement" pills.

"It'll get this big! Would I lie?"

Spokesman for Oscar Mayer.
Appear on Dancing With the Stars or Survivor. Has nothing to do with his name or situation, but reality shows are the last refuge of the disgraced celebrity.
The aforementioned "Below the Beltway" TV show with Spitzer.
Get together with Chris Cox, Charlie Boehner, Dick Armey and any other current or former reps or senators with penile names to form a "Members Only" sales franchise.
Go into the Witness Protection Program to hide from Huma, who is going to go all jihad on him when she gets home.

Greta just announced that immediately after Weiner resigned, he got a job offer from Larry Flint (sp?) for more than his congressional salary. Now there's a good match.

I heard the audio on the way home. There were a lot of rude comments, but the one that stood out was when somebody shouted out a question about whether he really had seven inches. I almost felt sorry for Weiner, who was trying to get through the speech, but then I remembered that it was his own damned fault.

Rats! I forgot to list porn star under his potential jobs.

Some member of the howard stern show did the yelling. He ripped off a bit from Opie and Anthony.
