As I type, Phoenix is getting it's first major haboob of the monsoon season. It's blowing so hard it sounds like my AC Unit might rip off the roof. My lights have flickered but they haven't gone out. It's going to be pretty miserable if they do. It's still 108 outside right now.

Monsoon storms are the only thing that redeem the crappy summer season. They can be exciting to watch.

Here's one from 2007:

Taken today, a half mile from my parents house, and about 6 miles from where I am.

Yikes! I've seen pics of sandstorms in Australia and China but I guess I never thought about that kind of thing here.

Fantastic pictures (http://www.abc15.com/dpp/news/region_southeast_valley/queen_creek/photos%3A-haboob-moves-across-south-valley) of another one happening in the SE valley right now. I don't think it's going to make it to my side of town but you never know.

I stand corrected! It got here fast! What a sight! It was like a plague coming over my house. Absolutely incredible sight.

They are saying on ABC15 that this is the biggest haboob in decades. Thirty miles wide. All planes at Sky Harbor are grounded. Absolutely incredible!

Yeah we get those here often too, but I've not heard the term haboob before.
These are not my personal pics, but here's a recent one rolling into Midland:

Wow neat video Jen.
It's amazing how it gets so dark at the end when the cloud of dust rolls over the camera.

A massive dust storm descended on the Phoenix area, drastically reducing visibility and delaying flights as strong winds downed trees and left thousands of residents without power.

The dust cloud that moved across the Phoenix valley last night had formed in an afternoon storm in the Tucson area, and then rolled north across the desert before sweeping over the city like an enormous wave, said National Weather Service meteorologist Paul Iniguez.

Radar data showed the storm's towering dust wall had reached as high as 8,000 to 10,000ft, or nearly two miles, he said.

Scroll down for time-lapse footage of the dust storm

This is our first summer in AZ and I was sitting here watching those things on TV, almost missing nights in KS sweating out tornado watches and warnings. Almost.

The other thing I noticed was the weathermen really enjoying calling these things "haboob" at every opportunity.

Is "boob" one of the no-no words on TV? Maybe they say it a lot because it's the only time they can say boob without getting fined.
