It's doubtful. Will probably be just another storm to die in the Atlantic.

Now forecasted to be a Major hurricane...where will it go?....one doesn't know...

I still think it's going to curve into the Atlantic and miss the US. Bermuda might take a direct hit though.

Is there a high pressure wind that going to make it veer north?

It started at the same place Irene did...and it looks like it will be heading towards the Carolina's again....:DDsmilie_panic: I have friends at various points up the north east that still don't have power...

In a nutshell, it's a combination of the coriolis effect, and a strong trough in the upper atmosphere that will redirect it.

Weather channel says it's too early to tell, and any predictions are based on pure speculation right now.....in other words, we don't really know...too early to tell. I think it's worth keeping an "eye" on it...at least until Labor Day weekend.

Katia began as an area of low pressure that had moved away from the coast of Africa south of the Cape Verde Islands in the central eastern Atlantic.

Storms forming in this region are known as "Cape Verde" storms. They tend to be larger and stronger than average because of the open ocean and occur most often in August and September during the height of the hurricane season. Irene was a Cape Verde storm.

 Projected to become a hurricane some time today and a Major hurricane some time this weekend

I figured I'd start a new thread as it is no longer a tropical depression......sorry Meggers!

"Katia is expected to continue on its current west-northwest track passing north of the Leeward Islands. It is also forecast to become a hurricane and possibly a major hurricane as it encounters warmer waters and reduced wind shear."

Everyone keeps saying that Katia is going to turn northeast...but so far, models are not indicating that....it's gonna be a nail biter until we see some direction from the models that show it going north.

I get a message from my cousin who lives in flooded Jersey" Omg...how do you guys do it in florida getting hurricanes year after year...I was so scared..:blah:"

I answered " we haven't gotten one in 6 years".... "oh, but still"

Well Lee almost screwed the pooch on this one. It is going to slow up the trough that's pushing through the US right now. That was going to get into the Atlantic and cause Katia to turn north, but the slower it goes, the more time Katia has to head towards the US.

Models I'm looking at though shows that it should get far enough east just in time to push Katia off. One of the models that goes out that far shows her just barely missing Massachusetts.

Still stand by my original thinking though. Landfall should not occur in the US. Along the Canadian cost is a possibility though.

Hopefully it plays out with a miss.

My sister had her power go out from Irene for 2 days and their driveway was undermined, they live on top of a hill.
