Three Is the New Four as Engines Downsize

Three is the new four as two automakers make big news with little three-cylinder engines with the displacement of a soda bottle. ....Ford unveiled its 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine at the Frankfurt auto show this week, promising to offer it in Europe later this year and in the United States… sometime.... Volkswagen will offer a three-cylinder engine in the Up! compact expected by year’s end.

Engines will only get smaller as automakers scramble to hit corporate average fuel economy standards expected to reach 54.5 mpg by the 2025 model year. Automakers have experimented with three-cylinder engines before — the Geo

Das Kleine Wunder—"the little marvel".
Ford's tiny three-cylinder engine is good for 118 horsepower...
The big problem with small engines has long been mediocre performance, but the adoption of turbocharging, direct injection, variable-cam timing and other tricks ensures decent, if not stellar, oomph. Ford, for example, boasts that its little three-cylinder will perform like a 1.6-liter four.

These things are death traps in an accident,.if a Motorcycle hits you it'll total this thing,..If you're a Christian be sure to order the cross painted on the roof option...to save on the vault liner..

Without the turbo,fancy cams and valves a 900 cc (900 cc = 0.9 liter,about half a two liter Coke bottle ) three-cylinder two-stroke engines delivers about 34 hp..

We're devolving towards the Trabant. It had a 600 cc two-stroke engine providing 26 horsepower and took 21 seconds to go from 0 to 60. The top speed was 112 km/h (70 mph).

How about The Messerschmitt KR200, or Kabinenroller (Cabin Scooter), was a three-wheeled bubble car designed by the aircraft engineer Fritz Fend and produced in the factory of the German aircraft manufacturer Messerschmitt from 1955 to 1964.
Engine:Fichtel & Sachs two-stroke single cylinder, operable in both directions of crankshaft rotation....Transmission: Four speeds forward or reverse (depending on engine rotation), sequential, unsynchronized.

Years ago a friend had a DKW three cylinder run about.Above ten mph The thing would free wheel when you took your foot off the gas... If you timed it just right you never slowed down or stopped at a light..He finally had to rebuild the engine so he pulled it,carried it into the house and rebuilt it one night on the kitchen table,..It ran fine after that...
