Airplane Crash At Reno Race

Authorities say race pilot Jimmy Leeward has died after a crash at the Reno Air Races. This weekend's races are also canceled.....A REMSA representative says nearly 21 people were admitted to Renown Regional Medical Center.....Witnesses say the plane was about 400-500 feet in the air when it nosedived and crashed at the Reno-Stead Airport around 4:30pm.

Our reporter Chris Ciarlo says the P51 WWII Mustang was third in contention during the gold heat when the crash happened.....The plane DID NOT hit the stands, it hit nearby tables instead....Leeward piloted the Galloping Ghost....A second reporter on scene, Paul Nelson says it appears the Mustang hit halfway down the stands. Crime tape now covers the area.

Aviation magazine features local pilot’s P-51 racer

Ocala aviator and movie stunt pilot Jimmy Leeward recently made an easy transition from the big screen to a magazine cover and centerfold.

The developer of Leeward Air Ranch and his P-51 Mustang racer are featured in the December issue of Air Classics, a magazine by Chatsworth, Calif.-based Challenge Publications, which has hit the stands at Books-A-Million in Ocala....A 24-page section includes coverage of the 47th National Championship Air Races & Air Show held in Reno, Nev., on Sept. 15-19, and there is a separate story and photo spread featuring Leeward and his P-51 Mustang racer, the “Galloping Ghost.”..Leeward believes the Halloween weekend turned out to be an ideal release time for the story.....It’s a ghost of another kind,” he said of his plane.

DEVELOPING: RENO, Nev. -- An airplane crashed Friday into a crowd attending an air race here, injuring dozens in what one event official described as a "mass-casualty situation."

A medical official later said more than 75 people had been injured, including 25 critically. There was no official word on deaths, though one report put the toll as high as 12 and the crash near the grandstands left a horrific scene of bodies and wreckage.

Reports of 12 Dead at Least 30 Critically Injured at Reno Air Races

Multiple fatalities at the Reno Air Races after an Unlimited plane crashed into the grandstand soon after take-off. Unlimited plane has crashed at the Reno Air Races just after 4 p.m. that has killed 12 people and injured at least 30 Friday, hitting people seated in the box seats in the grandstand...... According to witnesses pilot Jimmy Leeward was flying the Galloping Ghost, that went down soon after take-off during the beginning of the Unlimited race. The Unlimited plane slid into the grandstand, box seats injurying dozens of spectators. Reno-Stead airport authorities are asking everyone

That seems to the the story with most great WWII aircraft..They all start out with an underpowered engine and do poorly until they finally get a better engine...

The XF4U-1 powered by an XR-2800-4 prototype F4U Corsair.It started out with an Pratt & Whitney Double Wasp twin-row, 18-cylinder radial engine, rated at 1,805 hp..The F4U-1D (Corsair Mk IV): Built in parallel with the F4U-1C, but was introduced in April 1944. It had the new.-8W water-injection engine. This change gave the aircraft up to 250 hp (190 kW) more power, over 2000 hp, which, in turn, increased performance. Speed, for example, was boosted from 417 miles per hour (671 km/h) to 425 miles per hour (684 km/h).
