Rod Blagojevich, the ousted Illinois governor whose three-year battle against criminal charges became a national spectacle, was sentenced to 14 years in prison Wednesday, one of the stiffest penalties imposed for corruption in a state with a history of crooked politics.

Blagojevich's 18 convictions included allegations of trying to leverage his power to appoint someone to President Barack Obama's vacated Senate seat to raise campaign cash or land a high-paying job.

The twice-elected Democrat is now the second former Illinois governor in a row to be sentenced to prison, and the fourth Illinois governor in the last four decades. His Republican predecessor, George Ryan, currently is serving a sentence of 6 1/2 years, also for corruption.

Blagojevich had told the judge that he made "terrible mistakes" and acknowledged that he broke the law when he tried to sell an appointment to the Senate seat.

Blagojevich's attorneys admitted for the first time Tuesday that he is guilty of corruption and accepts the verdicts against him, but said the sentence of 15 to 20 years prosecutors wanted was too harsh. The defense also presented heartfelt appeals from Blagojevich's family, including letters from his wife Patti and one of his two daughters that pleaded for mercy.

But the judge made it clear early in the hearing that he believed that Blagojevich had lied on the witness stand when he tried to explain his scheming for the Senate seat, and he did not believe defense suggestions that the former governor was duped by his advisers.

I'm guessing he's got a cellmate that will ensure he doesn't decide to talk.

Oh for God's sake. If brokering an appointment gets you 14 years, the movers and shakers in politics should get packing.

That's the point. Give one high-profile guy a harsh sentence (which he deserves), and it makes people feel warm and fuzzy, like the system works, while so much corruption goes unpunished every day.

When you commit crimes against humanity everyday in your classroom, I can see your point!

Of course you have hard evidence to back up this alleged corruption. What am I saying. Of course you do.

Then lock up all the parents- the ones who spend the first five years of a child's life trying to convince him that it's nice to share.

I was listening to Rush today and he referred to Blago as the Cabbage Patch Doll.
I fell out laughing because he really does look just like one :D

I knew he was socially liberal, so is 3/4ths of the board, but I thought he was fiscally conservative too a point and not a communist apologist.

Teaching children to share is teaching them values. Sharing is VOLUNTARY. Teaching children that seizing taxes to legally steal hard earned money in order to enable your government to "share" it with people who have not earned it is communism.

Why are you here?

"Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints."

Perhaps God sent me to teach you not to start a pile-on.

Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.

You can hardly maintain that one should be free to hold the most outrageous beliefs under the cloak of religion while also holding a government job and at the same time maintain that Wei should lose his job because of his political beliefs.

It is offensive speech which requires protection, those who agree with us rarely need to fear us.

This country has a history of experiments in communism, collectivism, and socialism. It's not like it's foreign to us. From early on we have incorporated some aspects of the structured sharing systems, involuntary if you will, confiscation and redistribution if you please. Those ideas didn't spring forth like a may fly and die hours later, they came slowly and were instituted more or less carefully, deconstructed when obsolete.

Some people like to think that collectivism was tried in Plymouth, destroyed to the salvation of the nation, and never thought of again. This is simply not true. Collectivism has been very much a part of American culture, sometimes as a philosophical movement and other time instituted as government policy.

There is nothing wrong with criticizing Wei for his beliefs, as they are extreme. There is something wrong with saying that he is a criminal for holding those beliefs or accusing him of misusing his position with absolutely no evidence to support that. Do you even know his real name?

I guess that POV works for you when you hold that you are entitled to a blank check by virtue of your past or present employment. In reality, you're just looking to justify your own greed and demonize that of others.

Tell you what cupcake, I'd put my Charitable giving up against yours any day. I'd also bet that my "forced" giving via taxes for entitlement wealth redistribution programs is much larger than yours.

Oh,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Stick that greed comment up your fat butt.
