Thanks Occupy Wall Street For Inspiring the Youth With Your Tired Model of Revolution
Seriously -- my stepson tells me today that he's decided not to get a job and is postponing college so he can:

1) Squat on abandoned properties.
2) Make public art.
3) Get food stamps.
4) Knit more.

This, after spending a week in the Seattle OWS camp.

I've been trying to tell him for weeks that he has the luxury of making a bohemian existence a "lifestyle choice," and that his friends and him have the opportunity to get a job, save up for some land, buy some land and do whatever subsistence farming/cottage industry/lawn art/navel gazing that they want to, without stealing from property owners and poor children.

I went through this and I got over it in the last several years, understanding that:

1. I wasted ten years of my life with that stupid, race-to-the-bottom crap.
2. Having a job, a career, an area of expertise, competency, etc. is far more fulfilling than being lazy and a slacker.
3. There's no reason that you have to adopt that tired countercultural shit to make this a better world.
4. Industrious people always build the change.
5. It makes much more sense, to me, to have those who care about the world in business and industry, and science and technology rather than isolating themselves.
6. Smart people building a better world is always better than romanticizing pre-Industrial revolution nonsense.
7. Getting arrested is pointless. If each person blockading a street were really ready to make this a better world, it would happen.

I had hope for this movement when it looked like it was going to be in the "real world" -- but after the most liberal Mayor of the most liberal city kicked out OWS, it became clear to me that it was all about forcing everyone into hum-drum and uninspired socialism, decorated with hippie lifestyle accoutrements.

Fail.

And now they're going to try to shut down the West Coast ports? Something the unions they're supposedly helping don't even support.

Here's a clue: Port commissioners are elected by the public. They hold OPEN meetings on a regular basis. If people give a shit, why don't they steward a democracy, rather than planning some stupid radical action. If the radicals had the support they need for actual revolution, they wouldn't be getting their asses pepper sprayed by fat cops.

This movement is over, and it failed because of a lack of imagination.

Try this:

Live well.
Be industrious.
Don't concentrate your wealth in unscrupulous corporations.
Steward your democracy.
Get healthy.
Volunteer and give to charity.
Be an educated voter.
Consume less.
Consume wisely.
Give a crap about the environment.
Unionize.
Don't be lazy.
Help.

No one's tried that yet. At this point, those things are radical action.

It's interesting seeing the DUmmies begrudge her for being succesful. You'd think with more then 1000 posts she'd have figured out that what she typed in there would make her public enemy #1.

Yep. I've stopped bothering to post against OWS as the posts just vanish over there.

I was with them up to here:

Unionize

Unions are just as corrupt, if not more, than the corporations they are protesting against.

Wow. I am impressed. Someone articulated the Millennials' political philosophy and actually captured the new urban pioneer ethos.

Occupy a fucking city council meeting, you bunch of douchebags.

Fuck the 60's.

129. No, s/he won't be flamed, at least not by me. But to blame

a social movement for problems, which s/he admits pre-date her stepson's introduction to this very new movement, simply makes no sense.

Eg as I said above, my friend's teenage son has taken the exact opposite message from OWS but then his background was pretty stable.

Her stepson obviously needs help, not villification and not lashing out at the wrong reasons for the problems he appears to have. That will delay any help he might need. Far better to start with the real root of the problem to ensure he gets the help he needs.

He needs therapy, assuming we are being told the truth. There is no way anyone could get that message from this movement, so if he actually did, he clearly has some very deep-rooted problems to so misinterpret something so simple. I hope his family will do this for him.

152. He doesn't need therapy

He's never been in trouble, never done drugs, honors student. He has been drug down by the alternative school and OWS. The "adults" that should have gotten therapy a long time ago.

224. He has not been dragged down by a school or by joining a

movement he clearly has no idea about. In fact, it sounds to me like he has never been anywhere near OWS, as what he is describing bears no relation to the movement whatsoever. He maybe by pretending, knowing how YOU will react, what YOU want to hear.

He has problems, if what you are describing is true, serious problems. Anyone who says they are going to do nothing with their life, anyone who is attempting to find a scapegoat for such a decision to justify it, has some serious problems.

The young people involved in this movement are remarkable people. Not one of them, anywhere around the country, has interpreted this movement the way you SAY your stepson has. That kind of totally off-the-wall interpretation, and/or attempt to excuse being a failure, is definitely a huge problem that is HIS and his FAMILY'S. But if you want to remain in denial about it, that explains his problems to a great extent.

I am a teacher in a private school, and this is so familiar to me. Parents who have failed their children, trying desperately to blame someone or anything else. The sad thing is all the other children thrive, while these poor kids whose families are in denial, rarely succeed no matter where they go, what kind of school, who their friends are. Because no one is willing to face reality and deal with the obvious problems they have.

You have described a very disturbed individual. I hope you take the blinders off and get him some help, for his sake.

244. That's good stuff

I told you, he doesn't do drugs, he has a nice girlfriend, he's an honors student and adults say he's the most sane person they've ever met. He's never been in trouble, he is compassionate and he is generally conscientious. He is not in any trouble, and I am not in denial, and whatever creepy psychological thing you're doing is wayyyyy off base. The only thing that he IS is a little bit of a lazy person.

This is not the profile of a "very disturbed individual."

He spent a week in the camp at Seattle, and has decided that he wants to squat with a number of other Seattle teens and anarchists that are systematically taking over foreclosed properties. OWS in Seattle endorses this. OWS in NYC has also done this.

He is being influenced by people in the OWS movement to participate in this. Don't play dumb with me -- if you know anything about OWS, you know about the squatting.

425. Wait, which is it? Didn't you tell us he was ruined by his

'hippie parents' (and you haven't explained how you are his stepmom since you're not married to his father) and by the stupid school they sent him to.

Now you are saying their decisions turned out this almost model kid.

You know something, when you tell a tale you have to keep your story straight, otherwise people might not believe you.

The Banks are the squatters regarding the homes OWS among other great organizations, are trying to keep them from stealing. Millions foreclosed on illegally. The foreclosure scandal has revealed the illegal theft of millions of houses by the Banks, now the people are finally getting some justice in court, and OWS is attempting to force the crooked Banks to abide by the law, or to stop stealing people's property. For a Democrat you are extremely ignorant about all of this. Amazingly so, actually.

225. Turn off Fox 'News'. Where are you getting this garbage from?

Now I can see why your stepson might be having a problem with you, seriously. That is so totally false, I don't think even Fox was prepared to say it, just to insinuate knowing it would be so easy to refute.

I no longer take anything you say seriously, and I guess that's pretty much how most people feel as this point. Good luck with your life. And your stepson is not a member of OWS, sorry. I think he is confused, as OWS is about exactly the opposite of what YOU say, HE says. And since since 'he's' not here to speak for himself, at this point all I can say is this was a waste of valuable time.

245. What are you talking about. Sam Adams kicked out OWS because their camp

was a danger to themselves and others. He still supports OWS -- but they took down the camp because it had turned into a shithole.

253. What city is your stepson in?

And no, Sam Adams lied. As everyone knows who knows anything about that situation, so did all the mayors. They were given a memo, they all read from the same script, sorry you have fallen for it.

Btw, what happened to the children and the homeless that Sam Adams and all the other mayors claimed to be so 'concerned' about? Has he done anything to take care of them the way they were taken care of by OWS??

We are going to be following up on all those cities who made those claims. We will be publishing what has happened to the people THEY claimed were in danger. So far, we know that they are now without any assistance. Forgotten after being used as political footballs. No more lies going unchallenged. There is video and hundreds of witnesses so, Adams caved to the 1%, like so many others and the sad thing is how many were Democrats.

Where are the homeless now? Do you know? Does Sam Adams know?

She'll be lucky if they don't take out back and have her shot.

Watched an old episode of DRAGNET from 1969 yesterday. Friday and Gannon debated a college professor and a hippy with an underground newspaper on television. The scarey part was that it was the same tired old bullsh*t we are still hearing today, 42 years later. The American Left has moved one inch in over forty years; they're still trapped in the past , still convienced that no cops means no crime, still preaching that Socialism will save your soul and that their rights over ride yours.

In other words, people too stupid/crazy to feel the passage of time , or notice the ever changing world around them.

LOL Sabrina 1!

:rotfl:

Cats Against Frist says her formerly good kid spent a week with Occupy Seattle and now wants to "squat on abandoned properties" and "make public art." Sabrina refers to this as "doing nothing with their life" (which indeed it is) and then says that other OWS kids have not "interpreted the movement" this way.

Oh Sabrina.....

How about some "public art"?

We all need to thank Sabrina for unwittingly admitting that OWS is encouraging young people to do nothing with their lives. :)

(Oh, and a personal note, Sabrina. When the stress of teaching has you drinking alone too often, the brain begins to get a little pickled. Lighten up on the booze, honeybun. Your arguments will be more logical. :D

What have are two groups, one trying to recapture the ill spent days of their youth, and the other trying recreate romanticized piece of history that wasn't the wonderful era that the movies painted to be.

* Hippies were bums begging on the street for change because they didn't want to work

* Hippies were squatters in abandoned building because they didn't have the money to pay rent, or just didn't want to ( they also trashed the places when someone did rent to them).

* Hippies threated their children like pets and keep them in inhumane conditions.

* Hippies tried to stay stoned out of their minds all the time because a bunch dumb assholes told them that it would bring enlightment and wisdom; and they were stupid enough to believe it ( and many still do).

The Hippies are their era only left on true lasting mark ( which will end up on the headstone of the last hippy).
