(CNN) -- New York police arrested 68 Occupy Wall Street demonstrators on New Year's Eve after a flare-up at and march from their longtime base, a police official said.

The arrests came after a protest at Zuccotti Park and a subsequent march, said New York Police Department Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne.

A 28-year-old male demonstrator is charged with assault on a police officer after stabbing a police officer who had been trying to arrest him, according to Browne.

Update to this story.

(NY Post) (http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/manhattan/ows_mob_in_clash_with_cops_PWKCyTnw7qMpcg7VO9ovdO) Some 800 Occupy Wall Street protesters began the new year by trying to retake Zuccotti Park last night, starting a massive clash with police in which one officer was stabbed in the hand with a pair of scissors.
A suspect was arrested in the 11:30 p.m. incident, according to a law enforcement source.

Hundreds in the crowd of occupiers then surrounded the ambulance as it tried to leave with the wounded officer, the source said.

The officer, who was not identified, was taken to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition.
