NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- The Obama administration rejected a bid to expand the controversial Keystone oil sands pipeline Wednesday, saying the deadline imposed by congress did not leave sufficient time to conduct the necessary review.

"The rushed and arbitrary deadline insisted on by Congressional Republicans prevented a full assessment of the pipeline's impact, especially the health and safety of the American people, as well as our environment," Obama said in a statement.

And he blames the GOP for it. LOL

President Obama defended himself in a statement saying Republican’s hurried deadline on the issue forced him to make the decision.

“The rushed and arbitrary deadline insisted on by Congressional Republicans prevented a full assessment of the pipeline’s impact, especially the health and safety of the American people, as well as our environment,” Obama wrote (http://thinkprogress.org/green/2012/01/18/406418/president-obama-rushed-and-arbitrary-deadline-of-gop-forced-me-to-reject-keystone-xl/). “I’m disappointed that Republicans in Congress forced this decision, but it does not change my Administration’s commitment to American-made energy that creates jobs and reduces our dependence on oil.

So instead of making a decision that would have been a boon to this country and it's struggling citizens, he chose to throw a fit and shove it up the asses of the taxpayers.

It's not a dead issue, just a hastily and poorly executed attempt on forcing it without due diligence by attaching into onto the previous tax break bill.

Nebraska's Republican Governor Heineman asked that it be placed on hold due to the serious concerns about the safety of the critical Ogallala Aquifer. The states legislature voted 45 to 0, in favor of placing this on hold until confirmation is made that it will be rerouted.

There's an interesting report on the spectacle @ Cornell.edu (http://www.ilr.cornell.edu/globallaborinstitute/research/upload/GLI_KeystoneXL_Reportpdf.pdf) While one could argue with some things in that report, it does point out some misinformation going on about this pipeline.

Theres a lot of speculation he's doing it as a favor to W. Buffet. Buffet before he started doing all those "Tax Me More" ads on all the news outlets ran out and bought the majority shares of BNSF Rail. If the pipeline is killed, that oil will still likely come to the states VIA rail, and BNSF is the #1 rail to bring it here as they have the lines and cars to haul it.

Its kinda a pay to play scheme on their part. Buffet wants the pipeline killed so his rail gets the contract, Obama wants a talking point to bash the GOP with. Namely those under-taxed greedy millionaires. Buffet agreed to do those tv spots, and make a nice donation to the Obama/DNC re-election coffers, and Obama in turn kills the pipeline.

The likelihood of China getting the oil is low as the oil would have to be piped over the Rockies to the coast, then loaded on ships to be transported to china. It would cost far more then loading it on trains to ship it down to us. China could still get the oil, but we still stand the better shot at it then them, just it will cost us more to get it then before and Buffet stands to make billions from this..

Certainly the Republican representatives in the most critical state of the pipe line as far as environmental impact, who have a serious and well documented concern that could be rationally addressed, and are unanimous opposition in it's current form without the rerouting

...has nothing to do with it.

Well guess whats in the news today.

(Bloomberg) (http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-01-23/buffett-s-burlington-northern-among-winners-in-obama-rejection-of-pipeline.html) — Warren Buffett’s Burlington Northern Santa Fe LLC is among U.S. and Canadian railroads that stand to benefit from the Obama administration’s decision to reject TransCanada Corp. (TRP)’s Keystone XL oil pipeline permit.

With modest expansion, railroads can handle all new oil produced in western Canada through 2030, according to an analysis of the Keystone proposal by the U.S. State Department.

“Whatever people bring to us, we’re ready to haul,” Krista York-Wooley, a spokeswoman for Burlington Northern, a unit of Buffett’s Omaha, Nebraska-based Berkshire Hathaway Inc., said in an interview. If Keystone XL “doesn’t happen, we’re here to haul.”

The State Department denied TransCanada a permit on Jan. 18, saying there was not enough time to study the proposal by Feb. 21, a deadline Congress imposed on President Barack Obama. Calgary-based TransCanada has said it intends to re-apply with a route that avoids an environmentally sensitive region of Nebraska, something the Obama administration encouraged.

The rail option, though costlier, would lessen the environmental impact, such as a loss of wetlands and agricultural productivity, compared to the pipeline, according to the State Department analysis. Greenhouse gas emmissions, however, would be worse.

I'm happy to see that Rush is demanding Mr. Buffet's secretary's tax returns. I doubt she is a poor lady!

I was also happy to hear that NE came up with their own plan for the pipeline and plan on moving forward! Of course I have a feeling they won't get far.

The network of crude oil pipelines in the U.S. is extensive. There are approximately 55,000 miles of crude oil trunk lines (usually 8 - 24 inches in diameter) in the U.S. that connect regional markets. The map below shows some of the major crude oil trunk lines in the U.S.
http://www.pipeline101.com/overview/images/CrudeLines.gif

The U.S. also has an estimated 30,000 to 40,000 miles of small gathering lines (usually 2 to 6 inches in diameter) located primarily in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Wyoming with small systems in a number of other oil producing states. These small lines gather the oil from many wells, both onshore and offshore, and connect to larger trunk lines measuring from 8 to 24 inches in diameter. http://www.pipeline101.com/reports/Notes.pdf

Something struck me as odd about this. Obama didn't say the same thing when the stimulus bill was voted on and made into law before anyone even read it. But of course one benefited his ilk and the other benefits people who don't like him.

More news.

Via Politico (http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0312/73767.html):

President Barack Obama is intervening in a Senate fight over the Keystone XL oil pipeline and personally lobbying Democrats to reject an amendment calling for its construction, according to several sources familiar with the talks.

The White House lobbying effort, including phone calls from the president to Democrats, signals that the vote could be close when it heads to the floor Thursday. The president is trying to defeat an amendment that would give election-year fodder to his Republican critics who have accused him of blocking a job-creating energy project at a time of high gas prices.

He sure as hell doesn't want it passed or be on record for vetoing it.

Well, well, well.

Claire McCaskill, D-MO, actually broke ranks with her moonbat buddies and voted for the measure.

Methinks she sees the handwriting on the wall and is desperately trying to convince Missouri voters that she's not a raving moonbat lunatic Barry-worshiper.

But we know better.

Claire? Start packin' your bags, honey. You're goin' home.

I find it ironic that self described party of the middle class is willing to sacrifice our standard of living for a political agenda. As a higher and higher percentage of our budgets are going to energy costs their lies become more and more transparent.

right...hell the Union bosses in WI are finally getting the idea that the Dems don't give a shit about them, they screwed over the working man by voting against mining reforms that would have brought in literally billions of dollars for the next 100 years to the state in jobs, both directly and indirectly.

Going with the Broken Clock strategy? OK. I see this as a potential camel's nose under the tent moment. I still know enough about liberals to have great doubt as to their ability to reason enough to leave their beloved yet wrong on every thing party.

"For the Senate Democrats to vote against this bill is a sign that they're not with us. They're certainly not job creators, and in fact they're job killers. And I'm sick and tired of the partisan politics in the State of Wisconsin. The working people in the state of are taking a beating. Democrats and Republicans are at each other's throats, and this sort of thing has to stop," said Balistreri.

dude's a hack, and supports the retarded attempt to recall Walker. It's their fault as the Dems' push to recall Walker that lead to killing this bill which caused the FL mining company to pull out immediately. They are going to try and push it through if they can get 1 more vote, but the Dems fucked everyone over on it.
