TACOMA, Wash. - A rabidly anti-gay church known for its loud protests is planning to picket Saturday's funeral for the two sons of missing mom Susan Powell, who died in a raging house fire Sunday.

Margie Phelps of the Topeka, Kan.-based Westboro Baptist Church sent out a tweet saying the church will attend the boys' memorial service as a protest against the pending legalization of gay marriage in Washington state.

Link (http://www.komonews.com/news/local/Anti-gay-church-to-protest-Powell-boys-memorial-service-139022314.html)

For those of you not familiar with this story, it begins two years ago in Utah where this father took his two boys camping in the middle of the night, in freezing temperatures, only to come home and find his wife "missing". Everyone with a brain knows this father killed his wife. Recently the boys were heard telling people that "mommy" was in the trunk when they went camping and then got lost in a mine.
The state took the two boys away from their father last year and two weeks ago, confirmed that the boys could only visit their father under state supervision.

This last weekend, the father locked the state observer out of the house, attacked his boys with a hatchet and then blew up the house with all three of them in it with ten, one gallon gasoline bombs setup inside the house.

The outcry for the boys has gotten so large that the funeral had to be moved from a LDS church that can handle only 200 members in Puyallup to a church in Tacoma that can handle 1800 people.

Now these fucktards are planning on showing up at the boys funeral to protest the state passing so-called gay marriage. This will get very ugly if these people show up. So far Occupy Tacoma and Occupy Portland are planning a counter protest as well as Patriot Riders and several other conservative groups. I will be out of town or I can guarantee you I would be down there as well.

It means he deleted what he was going to say to you...which would have probably hurt your sensitive feelings.

I have no such qualms.

You're a fucking idiot. Stick to the gamer and music forums. You're so far over your head in the grown up part of CU it's pathetic bordering on tragic.

So go back to them and let the adults talk here. It's obvious that you're WAAAAAY over your head here with the discussions going on that the adults are having.

When these people protest, violence does happen. I've read of the kids from that church getting attacked. Far worse than a comic protest. I think these protests should be illegal. We're not talking about simple freedom of speech. We're talking about "speech" which provokes violence.

I don't see what he said in this thread that's so offensive. Is it really necessary for you all to hijack this thread with your anti-hai stuff? Couldn't you all take it to Thunderdome or something?

It wasn't a bad comment. And he's right about Westboro. They will protest anything. They're attention whores.

I disagree with the construct that one who speaks, even offensively, provokes violence. If someone attacks a Phelps child, then the Phelps or anyone onlooker would be justified in shooting the attacker.

Many people misunderstand the "fighting words" doctrine and the point is rather moot since Chaplinsky has been undone in subsequent rulings. The notion of "fighting words" is rather pedestrian as social and legal constructs go. It's a street mentality.

PS- I have never heard of anyone from WBC being physically attacked. Can you remember any of the particulars?

Hopefully the protestors will get the same treatment we gave them in Mississippi, where all cars with Kansas license plates were suddenly blocked in at the motel. And the local police were just "too busy" to help 'em out.:D

Most of the morons never made it out of their hotel parking lot. It seems that certain Rankin county pickup trucks were parked directly behind any car that had Kansas plates in the hotel parking lot and the drivers mysteriously disappeared until after the funeral was over. Police were called but their wrecker service was running behind and it was going to be a few hours before they could tow the trucks so the Kansas plated cars could get out.

I'm not saying that protesting is an excuse to attack. I'm merely saying it happens. I'll find some examples for you. These people do not care about their own family.

If someone attacks you for your speech, as he draws back his fist you should draw your weapon.

Ummm, Hai is the one who attempted to derail this thread, not I. I'd take it to the Thunderdome but I don't fight unarmed people in a battle of wits. If it did go to the Thunderdome it would be a massacre with Hai staring in the role of the 7th Cavalry at the Battle of the Little Bighorn.

Sigh. Well, here's the info you asked for.

Just FYI, if somebody came protesting my loved one's funeral, I may very well go off on their butt. People who do this are BEGGING to be hurt. I don't feel sorry for them. I feel sorry for their children, but that's it.

Instead of this Phelps is a victim thing coming up, I'd rather he be told not to do this in the first place. Truth is if you're going to protest funerals, you can EXPECT a butt kicking.

Where are the Blues Brothers when you need them? This reminds me of the scene in the movie in which they drive the Illinois Nazis off the bridge.

I think I'll shoot Fred Phelps an email warning him that Newark is gang country so if he doesn't want to draw the ire of the local gangs, he and his band might want to dress up in blue and to make sure to cross the B's off of their signs.

It does not matter how many they killed. Both have the same agenda and beliefs and want to kill their enemies. They are led by paranoid fanatics. Just Al-Qaeda acts on their beliefs, while WBC has not.
