Fla. shooting stirs memories of civil rights era

View Photo Gallery —  The fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black 17-year-old, by a neighborhood watch captain in Sanford, Fla., has led to a federal investigation, numerous rallies and a national spotlight.

They are joining the Trayvon Martin crusade by the hour now.

It feels like an echo from another era — when there was racial injustice in the headlines, when federal troops were dispatched to comb Southern swamps to look for blacks who had vanished.
And when lawyers for the NAACP slid into town with briefcases and addresses of safe houses.

It feels like the not-so-long-ago ’60s, back when getting federal authorities to move quickly was often difficult. But this is a different era, however tragically similar the outcome.

The Trayvon Martin story has multiple layers: a black victim, a Hispanic man who did the shooting in Sanford, Fla. In Washington, the head of the Justice Department’s civil rights division, Thomas E. Perez, is Hispanic. The attorney general of the United States, Eric H. Holder Jr., is a black man. The man who occupies the Oval Office, Barack Obama, is an African American.

And yet, even that arc of progress — while admired — hasn’t softened emotions and feelings.

“It reminds you of Emmett Till,” said Bernadette Pruitt, an associate professor of history at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Tex., who has written about Southern racial history and can’t stop thinking of Trayvon Martin and his family. “This so-called post-racialism is a figment of our imagination. Race, unfortunately, is still the barometer by which everyone is measured.”

Investigating the killing of the 17-year-old Martin, who was black, by neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman, who is Hispanic, is now a top priority for the FBI, senior law enforcement officials said Wednesday.

One focus of the FBI’s inquiry is whether Zimmerman muttered a racial slur seconds before shooting Martin on Feb. 26, as has been alleged. The FBI is trying to determine whether the audiotape of a 911 dispatch call between Sanford police and Zimmerman can be enhanced with sophisticated equipment that has been used in other cases. If it can, the tape will be transferred to the FBI laboratory at Quantico, one official said.

Enhancing the tape could be crucial to determining whether the shooting is considered a “hate crime” under federal hate-crime laws, according to law enforcement officials.

Top Justice officials were scheduled to meet Thursday in Florida with the Martin family and the family’s attorney. And Holder on Friday is scheduled to meet with black ministers at the White House, where the Martin case is expected to come up, according to a government official.

On Wednesday in Sanford, the doors of a black church swung open so those in pain could sit, or stand, and give vent to their hurt. Benjamin Jealous, NAACP president, was in town. He was there to deal with the death of an unarmed teenager on a darkening street. Zimmerman has claimed self-defense. The mourners showed up at Olive Street Baptist Church to pray for justice and talk about their run-ins with Southern law enforcement. Anger seemed to outweigh prayer.

One after another, they filed to the front of the red-carpeted sanctuary to tell their stories

This guy has been tried and convicted already by the media, Shep on fox wants him arrested immediately no objectivity whatsoever in his reporting.
It won't matter whether he is guilty or not ,Obama's fed is going to lock him up for some reason. By the fed getting involved and politicizing this, Obama is giving up any chance of winning Florida, I hope they think all of this race baiting is worth it because they will tear this country apart.

It is not getting away with anything that is my issue, it isn't up to the media or mobs to try and convict anyone.
By the time the fed is done trying to digitally twist a bad word out of an audio file we won't no who is guilty of what.
This will be used by Obama's justice department to attack Florida's gun laws and possibly to justify another decree from the emperor.

I doubt it. Florida has had this (or something similar) happen before; even with witnesses.

In this case, dead men tell no tales so good luck to those trying to go after Zimmerman. Ain't gonna happen.

If this is indeed an unjustified killing, then it is certainly a tragedy. If this man did overreact, as it appears right now, then he should be punished. However, I have to question why this particular shooting brings forth marches comparable to "civil rights era" marches, and yet the multitudes of innocent black victims of black gang violence, do not warrant the same or even more severe reactions. A young child was just killed in Chicago, in another gang shooting. Those stories are becoming far too commonplace in the windy city, and elsewhere. To my knowledge, the outrage in those communities doesn't come close to the same level as this incident, and that surprises and saddens me.

The flames are deliberately being fanned by the advocates of gun control, I.E. Obama administration and liberal mainstream media. The will feed racial unrest in order to push an unrelated goal.

This youth's family and friends appear to think he was a great kid. I'm not sure that the parents and friends of gang members always feel the same way. That is probably the difference, coupled with this being a case of a white man killing an unarmed black youth, which has a historical context, as indicated by the mention of Emmet Till.

Al Sharpton is gracing the state with his presence soon. A group of youths at Carol City highschool marched out of their classroom today in protest. Carol City is probably the worst, crime infested neighborhood in Miami. These two separate cheering squads highly make me question any amount of foul play.

But I don't know all the facts yet and have not been following the story too close.

Oh and let me add, they aired the Carol City kids ranting and raving about how a white man could get a way with shooting a black kid...but they don't have the facts either as Zimmerman is clearly not a white man.

Gun Boom Continues Despite Florida Shooting

Despite calls for stricter guns laws in response to the shooting of Trayvon Martin, firearm stocks are soaring as gun companies struggle to keep up with high demand.

Shares of Sturm Ruger & Co. (RGR) were up as high as 14 percent Thursday afternoon after CEO Michael Fifer announced the company was temporarily suspending its acceptance of new orders in an effort to meet a dramatic surge in demand for its products.

“Despite the company’s continuing successful efforts to increase production rates, the incoming order rate exceeds our capacity to rapidly fulfill these orders,” Fifer said in the statement late Wednesday.

Ruger received more than a million order requests in the first quarter of 2012.

Shares of rival firearm maker Smith & Wesson (SWHC) were similarly up about 13 percent Thursday — a sign, gun proponents say, that Americans are not swayed by the recent protests.

“I think it’s evidence that no one believes that the ‘stand your ground’ law is flawed or had a role in precipitating this tragedy,” said Michael Hammond, legislative counsel for Gun Owners of America. “Government by lynch mob hasn’t worked particularly well in this country when it’s been employed, and I don’t think it’s going to work now.”

Martin’s killing, which took place in Florida, has sparked controversy over the state’s so-called “stand your ground” law allowing individuals to use lethal force, rather than flee, in threatening situations.

When liberals don't like facts they change them to fit their narrative, we already had a member on the board try this.
This is no mistake, as many times as the races of those involved have been mentioned both in print, word and televised everyone knows who is involved.

Or they assume Zimmerman is white because of his name, and being ignorant of the fact that he was a adopted by a white couple. It's just race baiting and using ANY excuse to throw racism down the white man's throat.

This wasn't the Emmet Till case. George Zimmerman did not take offense at some sassy remark, gather with his friends late at night, grab the kid with the intent to kill, and participate in a group killing based entirely on a black kid's comments toward a white woman.

I'll let SistaToldja (http://sistertoldjah.com/archives/2012/03/27/fail-democrat-msm-narrative-falls-apart/) tell you:

-Do those who plan on murdering someone typically call the police and give them their whereabouts before they commit the act? George Zimmerman did.

- Do those who plan on targeting someone for murder typically give the police all their personal information (name, address, telephone number) prior to commencing with their sinister plot? George Zimmerman did.

- Do those whose intent it was to kill someone tell the police to call them back so they can tell them where they are while they are tracking someone they view as suspicious in their neighborhood? George Zimmerman did.

- Do those who have a bloodlust for gunning down anyone who looks suspicious – black or otherwise – call 911 at all to report the activity rather than take the law into their own hands? George Zimmerman did. In fact, on the phone call he made to 911, he first describes Trayvon was walking towards his SUV like Trayvon was going to confront him then. If his intent was to kill, don’t you think he’d have pulled his gun at that time and fired?

- Do people who are on top of someone else beating them up usually call for help multiple times?

It's time to stop this deliberately deceptive comparison.

Actually, my guess is that the black community is assuming that he is Jewish. The very first youtube video I saw of about the case (last weekend) had as its title: (Jew) Zimmerman kills (Black kid) Trayvon Martin. It was later changed to (Racist Adult) Zimmerman kills (Black kid) Trayvon Martin.

(Racist Adult) Zimmerman kills (Black kid) Trayvon Martin. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dShk5cc-QCA)

The uploader of this video, one Dinolaurent1, was called out by another uploader:

http: //ww w.youtube.com/wa tch?v=0GVvdDFdK1s

Many posters such as the anti Semitic dinolaurent1 have posted videos where they wrongly claim George Zimmerman is jewish.I have posted this to correct the neo nazi rantings and educate morons on german names.Firstly george Zimmerman father name is robert Zimmerman jr. and he is of german catholic decent. His mother Gladys is Peruvian of Hispanic decent. This article should clear the air it is from the Washington post. The shooter was once a Catholic altar boy — with a surname that could have been Jewish.

I'm betting there is still a strong current of antisemitism about this case, especially by those who haven't been following the actual facts too closely.

Can someone tell me how this could even be a political issue? The only question is whether Zimmerman violated Florida's version of the "Stand your Ground" law, which I believe he did, based on Zimmerman's statements to the police that he pursued Martin.

The pursuit was 25 seconds long while Zimmerman was talking to the police on the phone. Trayvon disappeared out of sight after 25 seconds, and the pudgy Zimmerman stopped pursuing. (Trayvon, on the other hand, approached Zimmerman's SUV for a solid minute, before running.)

Here is the actual timeline of events, based on the police phone call and the timing of the first 911 calls from neighbors.

Times below are Minutes:Seconds format.

0.00: (approx. 7:00 pm): Zimmerman's call to non-emergency dispatch. He is in his vehicle

0.58-2:06: Trayvon approaches Zimmerman's vehicle.

2.06: Trayvon changes his mind and starts to run. Zimmerman still in his SUV.

2.10: Zimmerman gets out of his car. (2.10-2.14)

2:14-2:39: Zimmerman pursues Trayvon on foot. He is winded. Huffing and puffing. (Windedness: 2.20-2.45 on the tape)

2.23: Dispatch asks if Zimmerman is in pursuit.

2.26: "We don't need you to do this."

2.39: Trayvon completely disappears. Zimmerman no longer sees him.

2.39-2.45: Zimmerman's breathing calms down

2:45-4.11: Zimmerman and dispatch discuss where to meet police officer; Zimmerman gives his name and address, but registers fear that Trayvon might still be around somewhere. Clearly he doesn't see him or know where he is.

4.11-5.11 (approx): Unclear. Zimmerman claims he walked back to van and Trayvon attacked him.

5.11 (approx): First 911 calls from neighbors start.

Here's George's call:
