1540 - An expedition led by Spanish explorer Francisco Vázquez de Coronado left Culiacán in Mexico in search of the Seven Cities of Cíbola.

1689 - On the Texas coast, Spanish explorer Alonso León discovered the ruins of a French settlement, Fort St. Louis.

1873 - The Texas state legislature repealed the law that had authorized the State Police.

1897 - Sarah Seelye became a member of the McClellan Post, Grand Army of the Republic, in Houston. She was the only woman in history to have served in the Union army.

1967 - Randy Matson set a new world record with a shot put toss of 71 feet, and 5 1/2 inches in College Station, TX.

2011 - In Arlington, TX, the Texas Giant reopened to the public as part of the Six Flags Over Texas 50th anniversary celebration.

On April 22, 1952, a live broadcast was made of a Nevada atom bomb test monitored by infantry at a 4 mile range and a group of guvmint VIPs distance unstated. The VIPs were supplied with dark goggles. A few of the soldiers had sunglasses.
