Kabul, Afghanistan (CNN) -- Afghan President Hamid Karzai ordered the arrest Monday of the Taliban who participated in the public execution of a woman accused of adultery.

Shock and outrage have mounted since an amateur video surfaced of a burqa-clad woman sitting on the ground while a man standing a few feet away shoots her nine times before a cheering mob.

The execution raises questions about what the 2014 withdrawal of NATO troops from Afghanistan will mean for women, who regained basic rights of education and voting after the fall of the Taliban in 2001.

Karzai condemned the killing and ordered security officials to arrest and punish those involved, according to a statement released by the president's press office.

What scum.

If that's what they do to their own, imagine what they do to infidels.

She probably wanted someone to pay for her contraception.

And Jews stoned people too you know, like 3,000 years ago but so what...It's in the Bible and stuff.

The Religion of Rest in Peace strikes again.

Yeah when the Egypt election results were announced, the tv showed joyous dancing in the streets that the Muslim Brotherhood guy won. I thought "what stupid women!". Maybe their husbands made them celebrate or something but why a woman would be glad about that is beyond me.

When you read about genital mutilation in Islamic countries, keep in mind that it's the women who do it to each other. They are just as nuts as the men, just in a different way.

Genital mutililation is not something that comes from Islam, though. It is a tribal practice in Africa, and was widely practiced in Europe by psychiatrists trying to prevent female children from chronic masturbation (from Victorian times to the 1950s). Christian missionaries have been fighting the practice since they've been working in Africa, long before muslims conquered in places like Somalia and Kenya.

Ayaan Hirsi Ali was mutilated as a child by her grandmother and other elder women from the tribe. Her muslim father was very angry with the maternal grandmother for doing it. Yet, she and her african muslim friends felt that they were more pure than the Syrian muslim women they met later, who had not been mutilated.

In a place like Somalia, where it is a totally tribal culture, the tribal customs and the Islamic practices have merged into one totally dysfunctional and brutal nation. Of course in a religion that has as little respect for women as Islam does, there is not going to be much objection to an old custom that injures women.

While you are correct that it did not start out as an Islamic practice, it has become common throughout Islamic states, including Saudi Arabia. In addition, there is significant confusion among Islamic scholars as to the divine inspiration of the practice. http://www.religioustolerance.org/fem_cirm.htm/

Fatwas published:Fatwas are published opinions by Muslim religious scholars. They are non-binding in law. But Muslim believers are expected to follow them. In Egypt, a number of Fatwas have been issued by the influential Egyptian Fatwa Committee on FGM:

1949-MAY-28: They decided that it is not a sin to reject female circumcision.

1951-JUN-23: They stated that female circumcision is desirable because it curbs "nature" (i.e. sexual drive among women). It stated that medical concerns over the practice are irrelevant.

1981-JAN-29: The Great Sheikh of Al-Azhar (the most famous University of the Islamic World) stated that parents must follow the lessons of Mohammed and not listen to medical authorities because the latter often change their minds. Parents must do their duty and have their daughters circumcised.

2007-JUN-24: As noted elsewhere (http://www.conservativeunderground.com/forum505/fem_cirm3.htm#mufti), the Mufti of Egypt, Ali Gum's announced that: "... this custom is prohibited."

So, depending on when the Fatwa was issued, and by whom, it either is or is not prohibited, but even that is telling. There is no controversy over Female Genital Mutilation in Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Shintoism or any other major religion, because just about all of them consider it abhorrent. Only Islam is currently debating whether it is appropriate to painfully and permanently mutilate a woman in order to deny her sexual pleasure for the rest of her life. I suppose that this is progress, of a sort...
