Smith and Martin peer ahead at the general election:

Barack Obama’s aides and advisers are preparing to center the president’s re-election campaign on a ferocious personal assault on Mitt Romney’s character and business background, a strategy grounded in the early stage expectation that the former Massachusetts governor is the likely GOP nominee.

The dramatic and unabashedly negative turn is the product of political reality. Obama remains personally popular, but pluralities in recent polling disapprove of his handling of his job and Americans fear the country is on the wrong track. His aides are increasingly resigned to running for re-election in a glum nation. And so the candidate who ran on “hope” in 2008 has little choice four years later but to run a slashing, personal campaign aimed at disqualifying his likeliest opponent.

In a move that will make some Democrats shudder, Obama’s high command has even studied President Bush’s 2004 takedown of Sen. John F. Kerry, a senior campaign adviser told POLITICO, for clues on how a president with middling approval ratings can defeat a challenger.

“Unless things change and Obama can run on accomplishments, he will have to kill Romney,” said a prominent Democratic strategist aligned with the White House.

The onslaught would have two aspects. The first is personal: Obama’s re-elect will portray the public Romney as inauthentic, unprincipled and, in a word used repeatedly by Obama’s advisers in about a dozen interviews, “weird” ...

The second aspect of the campaign to define Romney is his record as CEO of Bain Capital, a venture capital firm which was responsible for both creating and eliminating jobs. Obama officials intend to frame Romney as the very picture of greed in the great recession – a sort of political Gordon Gekko.

This ought to be in at least one of Romney's adds. Start with a montage of Obama attack ads, then run a voice over and super of the money quote: “Unless things change and Obama can run on accomplishments, he will have to kill Romney,” followed by the announcer asking, has anyone seen any accomplishments? Then cut back to the montage.

Romney has soooooo much material to work with against the Anointed man/child Pharaoh from nowhere.

But RINOs are generally too mild mannered to be so inclined. And thats the kind of advisers he has surrounded himself with. A bunch of McCain and Bush advisers.

Sooooooo much material. Maybe we'll get lucky and see him use something ...

Nothing obama does will work. He is toast. November 6th is going to be a beautiful day in America.

Imagine if a Romney strategist had said that about Obama.

Imagine if a Romney strategist had said that about Obama.

Well, seeing the backlash that Palin got for mentioning targets, the MSM would be ripping Romney apart right now. It sucks because Romney has to watch what he says, and obama can pretty much say whatever he wants.

Are we following the same campaign? :smile-new:

When I say watch what he says, he can't say things like 'Kill', or anything the remotely resembles the remark. They will let obama say it all he wants, but will in no way, shape, or form, let Romney say it.

I can't wait till after the convention when the gloves really come off. All obama is going to do is run attack ads (and nothing on his record), and Romney is going to run ads on obama's record. This should get good.

What's going to happen is Romney is going to keep making irrelevant stupid gaffes, and Obama is going to run ads about it, and then Romney is going to accuse Obama of only being able to run attack ads.

I don't think this is going to end up being about anyone's record.

What the Romney campaign needs to do is find all the Democrat whining about "political discourse" after the Gabby Giffords shooting and after every quote from Pelosi, Reid, Olbermann and every other hack, play this tag line.

End commercial with a funeral graveside scene with a voice over "Sorry Mitt, Option 1 did not pan out so had to go with option 2."

I haven't seen too much in the way of gaffes from Romney (although the media has done everything that they could to manufacture tham). The flap about the Olympics was basically the media attempting to conflate Romney's very measured comments about the security and seating issues with rudeness, but it was a response to a direct questions, and he was as tactful as he could be without blowing smoke. The comment about the Palestinian vs. Israeli cultures is only a gaffe if you consider a culture that hatefully teaches its children to blow themselves up to be the equal of a culture that wants all children within its borders to grow up in peace and freedom, which, unfortunately, many in the media do, but no sane person does, and I'd love to see that raised in a debate between Romney and Obama. In fact, the entire basis for the claims of Romney's "gaffes" is that he said things that liberals didn't like. During the same week, Obama told us that we aren't responsible for our own success, his staff denied that he had returned the Churchill bust to Britain and tried to stick to that story despite the Brits destroying it, and his State Department and Communications Chief couldn't identify the capital of Israel. Those are gaffes. Huge, honking gaffes, and the more that they get played in the alternative media, the more the mainstream media has to try to manufacture gaffes that it can pin on Romney. We're seeing the collective meltdown of the leftist media, and the correct response is ridicule and scorn.

Everything that obama has tried to use against Romney has backfired.

His 'gaffe' about the Olympics turned out to be true. So that was no gaffe. What he said in Israel about the Palestinians is true. Their culture is nothing but terrorists who blew themselves up to get those 72 virgins.

If you want to talk about 'gaffes' look at Biden. He has said some things that are really out there. In fact, every time he opens his mouth he says something stupid.

This whole thing, like stated above, is for the media to find anything and everything negative to say about Romney. If he donated $100 million to charity, the liberal media would find a way to make it out to be the worse than that anyone could do.

Which is why I said that Romney has to watch what he says and does. He has the whole MSM breathing down his neck to report the worst things they can about him. It is all in the way of trying to distract from obama record. And even Romney said, and knows, that. Which is why he is continuously bringing obama's record up.

I can't wait for the first debate. It should be interesting. I hope Romney backs obama into a corner with no where to run.
