Former Aide on Obama: 'Stunning that He’s in Politics, Because He Really Doesn’t Like People'

Neera Tanden, a former aide to both Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, had this to say about the relationship of the two presidents:

Clinton, being Clinton, had plenty of advice in mind and was desperate to impart it. But for the first two years of Obama’s term, the phone calls Clinton kept expecting rarely came. “People say the reason Obama wouldn’t call Clinton is because he doesn’t like him,” observes Tanden. “The truth is, Obama doesn’t call anyone, and he’s not close to almost anyone. It’s stunning that he’s in politics, because he really doesn’t like people. My analogy is that it’s like becoming Bill Gates without liking computers.”

It's a revealing statement from Tanden, who "served as senior advisor for health reform at the Department of Health and Human Services, advising Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and working on President Barack Obama’s health reform team in the White House to pass the bill," according to her bio at the Center for American Progress. She is currently president and CEO of the liberal organization.

Obama doesn't like people and doesn't get close. No problem convincing me of that.

I heard that she's already been to the wood shed and is backing off this statement. He must have a huge wood shed, as well as a giant bus to accomodate all those who were thrown under that bus.

It has always killed me when they say Obama is a "nice guy". All you have to do is watch that mean face of his and those empty eyes. I guess it proves that people only see what they want to see.

Biden isn't a nice guy, either. I cringe when I hear people saying it, including conservative talking heads. Biden is a nasty person, as well as manic.

Dick Cheney doesn't exactly come across as a nice guy. DUers say that they see a sociopath when they look into George W Bush's eyes, so your point about people seeing what they want to see is valid (I don't see a sociopath in W's eyes, just to be clear on the matter).

And don't forget that Bush "looked into Putin's soul". He'd have done better looking into Putin's record.:smile-new:

Absolutely true of BOTH presidential candidates this year.

It's hard to keep in mind that most political people are not as personable as Bill Clinton or George W. Bush. They are guys who enjoy speaking to crowds and talking to people individually, who maybe even get kind of a high from doing so.

Most politicians are like the rest of us. We are going through the whole "Don't touch me", "Do I have to shake that jerk's hand" thing when forced to endure public events for the sake of our jobs or families.

I think 0blowme doesn't like people because as a wannabe dictator he has rationalized that every person that he meets is a potential enemy and possibly slated for the firing squad.

“I think there is too much of the University of Chicago in him. By which I mean he’s academic, lacks passion and feeling, and doesn’t have the sense of humanity that I expected.”---Dr. David Scheiner

The difference is that Dick Cheney didn't try to come across as a nice guy. He seemed to enjoy his Vader persona. What I find offensive is the hypocrisy of Obama and Biden or perhaps it's just the naivete of some of their supporters.

Most politicians have a tremendous ego. I think eventually some of them look on their constituents as their loyal subjects, their minions who must "do" for them, lavishing them with meals, baseball tickets and much more.
