Parents Furious After Boys Suspended For Using Fingers As Guns (http://baltimore.cbslocal.com/2013/01/15/parents-furious-after-young-boys-suspended-after-playing-with-imaginary-weapon/)

TALBOT COUNTY, Md. (WJZ) — Is it child’s play or a serious threat of gun violence? For the second time in less than a month, a Maryland child is kicked out of school for using his finger in the shape of a gun.

Kai Jackson has more on the controversy.

No one is debating the importance of keeping children safe. The question being asked is what’s child’s play and what’s not?

There’s controversy at a Talbot County school after two 6-year-old boys were suspended while playing cops and robbers during recess and using their fingers to make an imaginary gun.

“It’s ridiculous,” said parent Julia Merchant.

This is the second time a Maryland child has been suspended for such play. Earlier this month, 6-year-old Rodney Lynch was suspended from his Montgomery County school after pretending to fire an imaginary gun more than once.

“Just pointing your fingers like this and then she did the pow sound and I just went like that and then I got sent to the office again,” Lynch said.

The school reversed its decision after Rodney’s parents appealed.

“They’re saying he threatened a student, threatened to shoot a student. He was playing,” said Rodney’s father, Rodney Lynch Sr.

“I do not believe maliciousness was involved here,” said child psychologist Dr. Joe Kaine.

Kaine says most 6-year-olds’ minds aren’t developed enough to understand why their idea of fun play might make adults upset.

“I can certainly appreciate that at school, that’s not a type of play that they are going to endorse and I certainly support that, but that’s where we educate the time and place for doing things,” Kaine said.

A number of parents agree.

“Suspending them is a bit harsh and I don’t think that’s gonna do any good for the parent, child or school,” said Janet Geotzky.

The number of suspensions has been on the rise in Maryland. School leaders say they will try to reduce those numbers.

As long as fingers are easily available they will be used as weapons, I call for an all out finger ban!

Even things that aren't really fingers like steak fingers and chicken fingers must be banned, no more finger foods period, I want fingers out of our schools!

Chicken fingers are fried aren't they? Mayor Bloomberg now has two reasons to outlaw them.

There is no right to bear fingers in the Constitution, bear claws maybe.

As a show of solidarity we should all raise our middle finger to the government right now!

Yeah, but who wants to deep fry a bear claw?

Suspension is a ridiculous over-reaction.

I don't have a problem with a school saying no violent fantasy play during recess. I don't even have a problem with a minor consequence for violating that rule by using a hand as a gun-a consequence like staying in during the next recess period. But suspension? That is stupid. In my day, kids didn't even get suspended for beating the crap out of each other, at least not in elementary school.

Little boys run around and play cops and robbers or cowboys and Indians. Millions upon millions upon millions of perfectly normal men today and even several generations past have grown up just fine while they played these games. There is not one damn thing wrong with kids playing like this, and I for one am sick and fucking tired of a bunch of touchy-feely Leftists getting their organic hemp panties in a twist because they're sticking their fucking noses in everyone else's business.

This entire school administration and indeed the entire school board should be dragged out of their offices by their ears and pelted mercilessly with Nerf balls until they get their fucking shit straight and stop with this nonsense.

Pansy... use those red rubber balls we used to use for dodge-ball! Those had a bit of a sting to them....:evil-grin:

In New York State, they've amended the law so that kids can point fingers at each other, but they are limited to five fingers per hand, so that they have to reload more often.

I have to admit that I agree with the second paragraph completely.

Well we're all so much safer now due to the fearless actions of the heroic school administrators. Why someone could have been held at fingerpoint and seriously traumatized for life! Maybe even forced to pull a finger on the non-fingergun hand! Oh, the huge manatee!

Pulling a finger could have released toxic vapors, which would have escalated to WMD use. :evil-grin:
