(CNN) -- They were part of an elite squad who confronted wildfires up close, setting up barriers to stop their destructive spread.

But the inferno blazing across central Arizona proved too much.

The 19 firefighters were killed Sunday while fighting the Yarnell Hill fire, northwest of Phoenix. It is the deadliest blaze for firefighters since the 9/11 attacks (http://www.nfpa.org/research/fire-statistics/deadliest-and-large-loss-fires/deadliest-fires-with-5-or-more-firefighter-deaths-at-the-fire-ground).

"Our entire crew was lost," Prescott Fire Chief Dan Fraijo told reporters Sunday night. "We just lost 19 of some of the finest people you'll ever meet. Right now, we're in crisis."

Real heros...

These men have balls of steel. They get dropped right into the action with only a shovel to fight the fire with. I pray for their families.

I don't know what to say, other than things like this make me want to bring some home made food and paper products to an under-funded and unappreciated DFD station house.

According to the media and Charlie LeDuff, the city is not even funding new protective gear, toilet paper or paper towels to the firehouses. Some of the firehouses don't even have trucks anymore.
