View Full Version : EU plans to fit all cars with speed limiters

09-02-2013, 11:30 AM
All cars could be fitted with devices that stop them going over 70mph, under new EU road safety measures which aim to cut deaths from road accidents by a third.Under the proposals new cars would be fitted with cameras that could read road speed limit signs and automatically apply the brakes when this is exceeded.

The new measures have been announced by the European Commission’s Mobility and Transport Department as a measure to reduce the 30,000 people who die on the roads in Europe every year

The scheme would work either using satellites, which would communicate limits to cars automatically, or using cameras to read road signs. Drivers can be given a warning of the speed limit, or their speed could be controlled automatically under the new measures.

A spokesman for the European Commission said: “There is a currently consultation focusing on speed-limiting technology already fitted to HGVs and buses.

“Taking account of the results, the Commission will publish in the autumn a document by its technical experts which will no doubt refer to ISA among many other things.”

The truth is that in my dotage I don't actually like driving faster than 70, but I don't want my vehicle to be compromised by an overreaching government.

When you oppose red light revenue cameras and speed revenue cameras people tend to take the "So you're the one!" attitude. Well I don't run red lights and as a rule I don't speed, and I am annoyed by people who do, but I want those cameras taken down. I just do.

I don't want a governor on my vehicle, or any kind of device in my vehicle which operates to serve someone else and which I cannot control. I want that black box out of there.

I governor my own vehicle. It's called going the speed limit or maybe 5mph over on highways.

Yeah that will work on the Autobahn!!

BERLIN — For many in this car-crazy nation, the freedom to hurtle down the famed autobahn at 120 mph or more is an inalienable right.

That's just creepy.

I don't think anyone here in Germany will ever go along with that.

I know these three guys will be pissed about this:

I'd include their tame racing driver but I don't think he has any human emotions to begin with.

There are lawmakers in Michigan talking about raising the speed limit on rural freeways to 80 mph. I don't see this coming to the US anytime soon. Doesn't Montana have no speed limit on their freeway?

It would be really bad if they raised in to 80 in metro Detroit. We are really crazy drivers here (stay off I-696 if you are not a local or a NASCAR driver, it's our autobahn).
