Despite fighting words, few expect punches

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1008/14366.html

NASHVILLE, Tenn. Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain spent the last few days exchanging fighting words notably "Ayers," "Keating" and "liar."

But while both sides arrived in here in a brawling mood with McCain, in particular, under growing pressure to bloody Obama aides and advisers to both candidates say that tonight's town-hall-style debate is no place to throw a punch.

"There's a lot of talk about nastiness and personal attacks, but in this type of format, that is a huge mistake," said Bob Barnett, a Democratic lawyer who negotiated the debate's ground rules on Obama's behalf. "You have to be respectful to the audience questioners, you have to be respectful of the Internet questioners, and you have to have the viewers who are watching feel that you are responding to the voters and the citizens who are asking the questions."

McCain's top strategists also acknowledge the format doesn't lend itself to sharp-edged attacks.

Maybe the article is wrong and they'll start punching each other in the face.

Well duh, Keating is a no go, but Ayers is a live one! and about time!

That whole Keating thing is a bunch of crap. McCain was found to have done nothing wrong or illegal. Ayers and his people were clearly guilty, but got off because the prosecution messed up. It hardly measures up to hanging out and working with a unrepented domestic terrorist.

John Glenn received the same admonishment that McCain did over Keating. And Glenn is campaigning for obama.

I'd give the edge to mccain, but only just barely. I doubt this thing will change anybody's mind or swing any of the undecided voters either way. I have a hunch that all but the most dedicated viewers probably dozed through most of it.

Lager

The campaign has gone on so long, I think people are tuning out. I predict the ratings for the next debate will hit the floor. Whatever people do when they get in the voting booth is probably by now a foregone conclusion. This wasn't the best format for John to be able to hammer dems for their role in the financial meltdown. And he never counters, refutes or explains the "billions in tax cuts for the wealthy" that Obama hits him with. There was nothing in this debate to take the focus off of the economy, and that helps Obama, even if he doesn't have any meaningful plan of his own.

cat714

I think people underestimate McCain too much. A lot can happen between now and November 4th. McCain had the edge on this debate. I could be wrong on this one, but the perception I get from the media is that the undecided voters are looking for the candidate who will give them the most handouts.

I haven't seen it fully yet, they're playing clips with Hannity & Colmes running through what happened. I'll wait til AFN replays it and make my choice. I did watch the most disgusting interview with Robert Gibbs...even Alan Colmes hit up on him. Gibbs is Obama's communications director; when Sean Hannity questioned him on why is Obama still connected closely to Bill Ayers, Gibbs called on Hannity to "admit he's anti-semetic" and "hates the Jews".

First of all, I've never seen anything from Hannity suggesting he's anti-semetic. Secondly, what the flying F*ck does that have anything to do with Bill Ayers? Is this what Obama's people are briefed to do, throw around baseless accusations while dodging the issue? Here's what I've heard so far:

You aren't voting for Obama? Are you white? Then you are a racist.
Question the Ayers connection? Anti-semite.
Question his experience? Racist.

I'm so sick of this election. McCain drives me nuts & if I hear one more idiot fawn over Obama....

LibraryLady
10-08-2008, 01:08 AM
Hannity did an expose of Obama and had Andy Martin as a source

The statement came from Andy Martin, a conservative writer and frequent political candidate who is credited as being among the first — if not the first — to assert in a chain e-mail message that Mr. Obama was secretly a Muslim.

I am not familiar with him but apparently they say he is anti-Semitic.

They couldn't argue with the story so they went after the writer
