WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama dismissed Russia as a nation that "doesn't make anything" and said in an interview with the Economist magazine that the West needs to be "pretty firm" with China as Beijing pushes to expand its role in the world economy.

Obama pressures on Russia, Putin in Ukraine crash probe Reuters Putin 'ignoring' Russia's long-term interests: Obama AFP Obama, Putin talk about Ukraine in phone call: White House Reuters Obama on Putin: 'Sometimes people don't always act rationally' Reuters Obama: Russia, Putin ignoring their own interests Associated Press Obama has tried to focus U.S. foreign policy on Asia, a response to China's economic and military might. But for months, that "pivot" has been overshadowed by a flurry of international crises, including Russia's support for separatists in eastern Ukraine.

Russia is the world's third-largest oil producer and second-largest natural gas producer. Europe relies heavily on Russian energy exports, complicating the West's response to the Ukraine crisis.

Obama downplayed Moscow's role in the world, dismissing President Vladimir Putin as a leader causing short-term trouble for political gain that will hurt Russia in the long term.

"I do think it's important to keep perspective. Russia doesn't make anything," Obama said in the interview.

"Immigrants aren't rushing to Moscow in search of opportunity. The life expectancy of the Russian male is around 60 years old. The population is shrinking," he said.

I think he participated in Colorado's latest business venture while in Denver last month. Nothing else could put him in that kind of haze.

I remember when I was in the aluminum business and the company I worked for had to buy up Russian made ingots to just to keep the market stable. We had it stored right along the banks of the Mississippi River near Davenport, IA. This was in the 90's.

Plus now there is this:

United Company RUSAL (Russian: ОК РУСАЛ, /OK RUSAL/) is the world's largest aluminium company

Yeah, Russia does not make anything.

Was it in the newspaper? :biggrin-new: That is where he learns everything, the media.

Heh! Pig nails it.

Dumbass should probably consider picking up a newspaper once in a while instead of just occasionally watching Rachel Maddow. Russia is the world's largest producer, by far, of the nickel that is needed in Prius batteries, not to mention a bunch of cadmium, also needed for those Prius batteries. Plus pretty much every cell phone and computer on the planet.

But, yeah, they don't make anything, so no worries.

Idiot.

There was another metal that was necessary for one alloy blend of aluminum that was being heavily mined in Russia that greatly increased the strength and reduced the weight. I can't remember the name of it right now. It was being used for military planes and we milled the aluminum at ALCOA. If it was not so late I could shoot off a text message to Iowa and get an answer, but the point is, Obama is full of shit.

In 2013, exports from Russia amounted to US$526.4 billion, up 74.4% since 2009. Russia’s top 10 exports accounted for 73.4% of the overall value of its global shipments.

Based on statistics from the International Monetary Fund’s World Economic Outlook Database, Russia’s total Gross Domestic Product amounted to $2.553 trillion in 2013.

Therefore, exports accounted for about 20.6% of total Russian economic output.

Given Russia population of 142.5 million people, the total $526.4 billion in 2013 Russian exports translates to roughly $3,695 for every person in the country. This compares with a benchmark $2,545 in exports per person for the world’s total exports (assuming an estimated global population of 7,095,217,980 per the CIA World Factbook).

Russia’s Top 10 Exports

The following export product groups represent the highest dollar value in Russian global shipments during 2013. Also shown is the percentage share each export category represents in terms of overall exports from Russia.
1.Mineral fuels including oil: $304,559,452,000 (57.9% of total exports)
2.Iron and steel: $20,050,729,000 (3.8%)
3.Pearls, gems, precious metals and coins: $14,367,047,000 (2.7%)
4.Fertilizers: $9,119,157,000 (1.7%)
5.Machinery: $8,815,393,000 (1.7%)
6.Wood: $7,324,251,000 (1.4%)
7.Aluminum: $7,181,742,000 (1.4%)
8.Inorganic chemicals: $5,009,209,000 (1%)

9.Copper: $4,962,945,000 (0.9%)
10.Electronic equipment: $4,914,638,000 (0.9%)

My first guess would be manganese.

You might be right. It made the coils dark in color and the scrap could not be remelted or it would cause an explosion.
