"Tax by Mile" Idea to be Tested in Texas

Proposal could replace the gasoline tax

Residents of five central Texas counties have been invited to participate in a study to determine whether it is feasible to tax motorists by the mile, 1200 WOAI news reports.

Texans now pay 38.4 cents a gallon in gasoline taxes, which are used to fund highway construction and repair. But as we drive fewer miles and buy more fuel-efficient cars, gas tax revenue is dwindling, and after electric cars become a reality on the road in 2010, that revenue may begin to dry up altogether. So transportation officials are trying to come up with an alternative to the gasoline tax, and a tax per mile driven appears to be the most popular option.

Oh yeah, I want a government monitored GPS System installed on my vehicles. We can always trust the government to do right.

Lets see - manufacture device with sliding shield to block GPS signal. Yep - I could make money at that. ;)

Next will be a governmental contraption to determine if you have been going over the speed limit and issue tickets accordingly. If that ever happens, I would have to give up driving.

GPS already has that: Speed Over Land designation.

The government has not mandated mfg. have to install them yet. Some Rental companies have had them installed.

The big fine $$$$$ comes when you go out of state when the rental contract stipulates otherwise.
