The name is not really Jack Ryan. I just play him on the internet since I was a big fan of Tom Clancy.
But spying was the game. USAF Security Service linguist in the 60's.
The other board I used to post on had many linguists so it must not be as uncommon as I thought.
I mostly lurk and don't post much but you may see me every once in a while.

I used to be a fairly cunning linguist myself, once upon a time. Ahem...
I'm surprised you didn't go with the Blackwood Oakes moniker. Has Clancy caught up to Buckley yet? I gave up when Jack became the President.

I lost interest in Clancy when he went to the cyber stuff.
I could not relate to the stuff he had in those books like I could his earlier works. In the earlier ones it was like "Yeah I know what he is talking about".

Russkie. Da, that was it.
(and it was so long ago that is about the only word I remember)

I figure Clancy must still be getting paid by the word. I'm sure you remember plenty of Russian. You just need the right motivation.

I didn't understand a word of that but it looks like an excellent incentive to break out the dictionary and re learn.
