Altered Obama photo in GOP club newsletter sparks outrage

Illustration shows the candidate's head on donkey's body on a bogus $10 bill that says 'Food Stamps.' Leader of the Upland women's group denies racism, but a state party official decries the image.

A Republican women's club in San Bernardino County sent out a recent newsletter with a photo of Barack Obama surrounded by fried chicken, watermelon and ribs, sparking widespread outrage and rebuke from GOP leaders and Democrats.

The illustration shows the Democratic presidential candidate's head atop a donkey's body on a bogus $10 bill referred to as "Obama Bucks." Inscribed on the money are the words "United States Food Stamps" surrounded by stereotypical African American food.

The October newsletter went out to about 200 members of the Chaffey Community Republican Women, Federated, based in Upland.

"I apologize to anyone who was offended because that was not my intent," said club President Diane Fedele. "It was poor judgment on my part. It was strictly an attempt to point out the outrageousness of Obama's statement that he doesn't look like all those other presidents on the dollar bills."

The caption reads: "Obama talks about all those presidents that got their names on bills. If elected, what bill would he be on ????? Food Stamps, what else!"

I don't think it's funny. I actually think the food stamp concept was good. But I could do without the fried chicken, watermelon, etc.

Seconded. Leave out all the racial stereotypes and it could make a point, but throwing in all that crap it just looks racist.

I, for one, don't really care about being called racist. I know what's in my heart, and I know you can laugh at steroetypes without being racist.

But why use a stereotype about the fact that he is black? I truly don't get it.

Uhh, because he is black? The same as I laugh at old man jokes about McCain.

Alrighty then. I happen to think there's a lot more to make fun of him about than the fact that he is black. And there's a lot to be afraid of if he's president, having nothing to do with the color of his skin, but then content of his character.

But that would take some kind of intellect to discern, no? Thatís no fun. :(

That's exactly why Obama is squealing "racism" over everything. His character can't take serious investigation.

I agree that it can't, but I see no reason to add to the fodder with racist campaign materials.

The joke doesn't make any sense. Why would anyone associate the Obamessiah with fried chicken and watermelon? He's not black.

I don't care if Obama was purple. I don't like him because he's a socialist. I also don't care if people make jokes about the color of his skin. I don't mind the southern redneck jokes, either. That's why I think it's OK to make jokes about stereotypes. It's steroetypes, not facts.

Besides, yesterday, before the Alfred E thingie, Michelle ordered two grilled lobsters, IRANIAN caviar and champagne....for lunch.

The Hussiens have never even SEEN a watermelon.

Can you honestly tell me that if you go into the ghettos of Philly they don't have seriously good Chicken and Rib joints? That there isn't a larger selection of kool-aid there than in the burbs? It's no more racist than it would have been if it was an Italian's face and they put spaghetti and meatballs around him.

ANYHOW - I think they made a serious mistake though. It should have been lobster, caviar, and champagne not chicken ribs and watermelon. Obama's not a black man. He's an elitist.

Here here Rebel. Personally I think it looks pretty poorly put together and it's not very well thought out satire, but I too am so sick and tired of people crying racist every 10 minutes. They're just stupid stereotypes people, get over it. I don't see Asians crying racism when people imply they're smart and really good at math, or white guys getting all bent out of shape when you say we can't dance worth a damn. :D

BTW, are these even considered bad things to like? Who the hell doesn't love KFC and ribs? I mean that's un-American. :p

I don't think anyone considers this "perfectly acceptable." But some people find it funny.

Personally, I think it's in poor taste and looks like it was made using MS Paint. There are plenty of other ways to lambast LP's hero, why use racism?
