Washington (CNN) Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid said Friday he won't seek reelection in 2016, a surprise move that's certain to open a fierce battle for his seat as well as a fight to lead the Democratic party in the chamber.

The fifth-term Nevada Democrat had denied retirement rumors for months, which grew louder after he suffered serious injuries in an exercising accident on New Year's Day.

"We have got to be more concerned about the country, the senate, the state of Nevada, than us. And as a result of that, I'm not going to run for reelection," he says in the video.

I love this news. But this does toss a monkey wrench into 2016 as with Harry on the ballot, Nevada was a almost assured flip seat for us in the senate.

This is true. Those idiots up North of me are union heavy due to all the mining & casino jobs and they might vote for another democrat, when they might not of voted for Harry.

I have a feeling Harry's son Rory might run, I hope so, Rory is an idiot and I can't believe anyone would vote for him.

I'm disappointed he wasn't involuntarily retired, by NV voters. But a Senate w/o Harry Reid I will take.

Yep.

Looking at the race right now.

Las Vegas Councilman and former State Senator Bob Beers (R). He's a fairly serious candidate - he won almost 30% of the vote in the 2006 primary for Governor, beating out the Lieutenant Governor.

Former Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki (R) is considering running.

Libertarian activist Wayne Allen Root is running.

Democratic candidates are;

Former state AG Catherine Cortez Masto (D),

Former state Secretary of State Ross Miller (D).

Rep. Dina Titus (D) is currently looking at running as well.

Of the three, Reid seems to support Masto more.
